MOSCOW, Russia The two mysterious young widows who brought terror to Moscow by targeting its famed subway system might have been motivated by a forest massacre in which garlic-picking villagers were slain by government forces.
Both suicide bombers one 17, another reportedly 20 were from Russia's predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region, home to a fierce Islamic insurgency that has been fueled by frequent killings, kidnappings and torture of residents by government forces.

Harmless garlic pickers.........
Nice.
My guess is that the parents forbad her from seeing him. Legal age in Russia is 16, but some Caucasus region ethnic groups (Christian and Muslim) have traditional notions of when a woman is allowed to date (never, except with a chaperone) or who a woman is allowed to marry (no one, without the parents' permission). Remember the scene in the Godfather when Michael Corleone is dating some sweet young thing (followed by a camera pan to the matrons and crowds of kids right behind them) in an Italian hamlet, while hiding out after killing drug kingpin Sollozo and his tame cop McCluskey? That's the Caucasus today.
Your comment goes way beyond trivializing what may have been a(nother) genocidal action in Chechnya.
I take it back. Your comment WAS just trivializing, not way beyond.
But there is no reason to trivialize reported genocide, unless for some reason Russia deserves a free pass to do such things in the Caucasus.
Did you read the article?
The militants are now seeking to create an Islamic state across the North Caucasus.
It seems the Russians are getting a bit weary of the Muslim’s demands to create Islamic States within the territory of Russia.
Wait until the Muslims demand to create an Islamic State in Michigan.
“Remember the scene in the Godfather when Michael Corleone is dating some sweet young thing...”
If you thought she was pretty, you should see her real life daughter, Violante Placido. Good genes apparently.
Russia has sought to subjugate the Caucasus for centuries. The Caucasus "is" Russia because Russia say so, and we're indifferent.
The Caucasus "is" Russian for much the same reason North Dakota and California "are" American.
In both cases an expanding European-ancestry state conquered the less-advanced inhabitants over the course of the 19th century. The parallels between the Caucasian Wars and the Mexican and Indian wars are quite interesting.
I am frankly amazed by the number of so-called conservative people who take Russia’s side on this subject, and see no problem with its war on populations to the south, as necessary.
Where do you get I’m on the Russian side?
I was merely making a historical observation about the parallels between the Russian expansion to the south and the American expansion to the west during the 19th century.
Unless you have some reason those parallels aren’t valid?
After Beslan, I don't care what Russia does to pacify its Islamic population. I would not care if they exercised the Carthage Option.
So, make your parallel. It doesn’t excuse what Russia is doing today. About the time of the Indian wars, Russia was exterminating and causing to flee from the Caucasus, with huge loss of life, the Circassian population. That is probably an orders of magnitude greater problem than what happened on the American continent. ...Which is not to excuse what happened here.
"The militants, who once fought for Chechnya's independence, are now seeking to create an Islamic state across the North Caucasus. In Dagestan, they carry out attacks almost daily."
"The four garlic pickers died along with 18 suspected Islamic militants in a three-day shootout in the mountainous forests that straddle the North Caucasus provinces of Ingushetia and Chechnya."
And I'm amazed that a FReeper thinks a new Islamic state is a great idea.
The penalty for picking garlic out of season is far too severe.
Am I the only one amused by these Muslums pathetic attempts to appear butch by brandishing handguns?Seems like all these scum like to pose with guns.
