The McCain Mutiny: A maverick fights for his political life—and his soul
Newsweek ^ | 2010-04-03 | David Margolick

Posted on 04/03/2010 3:58:32 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Late last month, at a dusty fairground outside Tucson, John McCain stood behind the person who is, at least for the next few years, surely his most important legacy to American politics. And speaking to the adoring mob, Sarah Palin stood behind John McCain, repaying his inestimable gift to her in the most compelling possible fashion: by helping him to survive.

(snip)

Many, many years ago she'd competed in a beauty pageant, Palin declared, as women howled (and a few men growled) approvingly. McCain would surely win the talent and debate portions of any such contest, she went on, but no way would the Washington elite and "pundints" and "lame-stream media" ever crown him "Miss Congeniality"! "He's never been a company man, he's never been one to just 'go with the flow,'?" she crowed.

(snip)

...Palin had apparently missed the real message this electoral season in Arizona: for his three decades in Congress, McCain hadn't gone with the flow enough, at least not enough to satisfy many Arizona Republicans. Why else would his rival, former congressman J.D. Hayworth, be billing himself as "the consistent conservative"? Many of the GOP's most faithful, the kind who vote in primaries despite 115-degree heat, tired long ago of McCain the Maverick, the man who had crossed the aisle to work with Democrats on issues like immigration reform, global warming, and restricting campaign contributions. "Maverick" is a mantle McCain no longer claims; in fact, he now denies he ever was one. "I never considered myself a maverick," he told me. "I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities." Yet here was Palin, urging her fans four times in 15 minutes to send McCain the Maverick back to Washington.

Enjoy your coolaid... SoCalPol.... the truth must have stung to get you namecallin like a little liberal. Isnt the first time a promise went adrift because of party politics, wont be the last. A true conservative would have addressed the issue as a matter of reason not emotion.

We have so many good ones or people I like.

Chris Cristie - the guy is a fighter and he is smart.
Michelle Bachmann - brains, beauty and a fighter
Paul Ryan
Rick Santorum - not a bad guy
Steve King, Pence, Palin (if she disowns McCain) and a whole bunch I am forgetting

Maybes:
Mitch Daniels, John Thune

I would love to see a youthful and tough Ryan going after the Kenyan. The best stuff in a LONG time was Ryan tearing into Obama during the healthcare thing.

If you think McCain isn’t detested by a large portion of conservatives who have nothing and want nothing to do with Ron Paul, you’re quite mistaken.

McCain has stabbed conservatives in the back for a decade or more now....Ron Paul has nothing to do with it.

Frantzie, do not leave out your support for Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, and how you consider Ron Paul "legit"

Good one. This man is a part of the hidden treachery of getalong politics that keeps the right from defending the constitution through a political party. This video highlights it well. The single greatest threat we now face is granting of amnesty to millions of illegals forming a state dependent class and voting block that will keep the left in power forever. Reagans great sin was amnesty for a few million which has brought us 10’s of millions illegals now and a new amnesty will bring even more.

These open border for the cheap labor and democrat votes people in the name of compassion must be stopped now and that, for conservatives, means John McCain and those that support or enable him.

This thread isn’t about Frantzie or any other freeper. It’s about McCain. If you support McCain, say so. At least Palin had the guts to say what she means in supporting him. If you don’t, why are some of you constantly after anyone who doesn’t?

Focus. Changing the subject won’t get McCain or Palin off the hook.

You might want to check who some on your list supported.

BTW, Paul Ryan is the fist person Sarah Palin mentioned as
a person she respects. Palin also backs Bachmann.
Chris Cristie is doing great for New Jersey. HE is
best where he is at.

I hope you don’t read the Bible. Most who wrote it were not
perfect. Some even chucked rocks at Christians.
Some even contradicted each other.
IF you are looking for perfect, Christ ain’t on the ballot

Well I guess that means the whole GOP, because all of them lined up behind McCain.

So whould you have said the same thing about Ronald Reagan?

Would your approach have been the same?

Remember, he was the first to not only propose Amnesty, but to get it passed.

Alex, can I take Bold-Faced Lies for 1000?

He never claimed to be a maverick? That was his entire presidential campaign strategy! He’s really going all out to re-invent himself. This guys reputation for being a straight-shooter is long, long behind him even amongst his former fans in the lib media. I have no doubt he’ll win re-election, but at some point he has to ask himself if maintaining even a shred of integrity might be a fun idea.
