Iran's girls' football team banned from Olympics for wearing hijab (soccer)
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | April 6, 2010

Iran's girls' football team has been kicked out of the Youth Olympic Games because FIFA rules prevent players wearing an Islamic headscarf.

(edit)

FIFA maintains football's international rule book which contains a section on players' on-field equipment.

Law 4 states that "basic compulsory equipment must not have any political, religious or personal statements.

"The team of a player whose basic compulsory equipment has political, religious or personal slogans or statements will be sanctioned by the competition organiser or by FIFA."

The hijab issue was first examined in 2007 after an 11-year-old girl in Canada was prevented from wearing one for safety reasons.

FIFA's rules-making arm, the International Football Association Board, declined to make an exception for religious clothing.

Iran was scheduled to compete in a six-nation tournament for girls at the inaugural Youth Olympics being held Aug. 12-25 in Singapore.

So I guess that pretty much rules out beach volleyball?

I would imagine so....both on the grounds of the headscarves being against safety rules but also because nobody would want to watch it.

I've heard that women's beach volleyball, wisely, has instituted rules that restrict the maximum area (in square inches) of a player's uniform. My kinda sport.

You know, it’s information like that which makes me so glad that I come to Free Republic. Where else are you going to get vital information like that? ;-)

Hopefully there is no ‘minimum’ uniform size, and the teams can design them with the maximal freedom of movement and tanning opportunities in mind.....

It's a verified rumor. Even if it's not true, it should be. The comic possibilities of the Iranian women's beach volleyball team are boundless. Maybe they can put a 20' tall screen around the court? With armed guards and mullahs only on the inside of the screen, to protect the girl's "chastity".

You know, on the one hand you paint a ludicrous picture but on the other hand the Islamofascists have never let us down in terms of out-doing our wildest jokes about them, in reality. We can manufacture in fantasy the most hysterical, unbelievably repressive and breathtakingly backward activities, policies and statements for them and then some time later we find out that they’ve actually done it.

Gotta go now, thanks very much for chatting :-)

So does Obama, but I'm repeating your point.

I can just imagine what a swim team with these gals would look like. I’d like some comedy with sports.

When I was in graduate school about a quarter of the students in my dorm were Iranians, in days of the Shah. They had some of the most beautiful and shapely women I have ever seen in my life. Some of them were somewhat promiscuous, in that they would make out with Iranian men in public. I think some of them even dated non-Iranians.

Iranian women and men in those days were incredibly political, clannish and arrogant, though Iranians of both sexes seemed to avoid atheletics. They were, in my opinion, mediocre students, being far too political. Most of them were anti-Shah and anti-American, but not particularly Islamist. Islam is just a perverse pretext for anti-Americanism, imho.

By Iranian standards those girls are dressed pretty racy. I mean you can see their face and (gasp!) make out the shape of their legs in those loose pants. During play you might even glimpse a naked wrist. The mullahs missed this one. Besides in Islam I thought these girls would have already been married for maybe 10 years.

Don’t worry. This soccer league will see the light and bow down to sharia soon enough.
