Richardson to tour border today, meet with Arizona governor, law enforcement.

The Big Thunder Rodeo scheduled for Saturday at Animas' Rancho Hidalgo has been postponed until a date to be determined because of the shooting death of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz late last month, rodeo organizers told the Deming Headlight.

Meanwhile, Gov. Bill Richardson plans to tour the international border in New Mexico's Bootheel and southeastern Arizona today "to get a first-hand look at the National Guard and increased police presence he has ordered along the Mexican border," according to a Governor's Office news release.

Yep. I’ve been there. I was a reporter for the Deming Headlight in the early ‘90s. Sparse landscape, but beautiful in its own way. Wonderful people out on the ranches and farms.

I’m sorry to hear this. All the boondocks of Deming were my stomping grounds as a kid. I’ve been up and down and back and forth across that border countless times, with never a worry. These are sad times.

You are right, these are indeed different (sad) times. Some of the people crossing the border now have no love for Americans.

I hate to use absolutes - if I were to qualify that by saying those who cross anywhere else but at a Port of Entry; well, then I could say all.

And many who cross at the PoE fall into the category of America-haters as well.

Before my time, but I heard countless stories of groups of Deming people going to Palamos, Mexico, to party at Pete and Tilly’s. They parked their cars on the US side and climbed through a hole in the border fence in the wee hours after the legal border crossing had closed.

I understand. I don't like to use absolutes, either. It just made me think, when I read the word, "some".

If most of those sneaking accross the border liked America and Americans, they would show respect for Americans and their property. Like learning English, perhaps? Picking up their trash? Not driving drunk? Not molesting our children and murdering our citizens? Not bringing incurable disease with them? We all know the story......

Anyone know if Richardson made a showing at any of the advertised stops today, especially the first one in Arizona? He was with the Rio Rancho mayor at a press conference this morning to announce a solar manufacturing plant.

Someone was always on the US side to catch kids trying to sneak booze across. The hole in the fence was there for when the Mexican side took a break. No one cared. I had some good times at Pete and Tilly’s.

Richardson did a helicopter tour of the border in NM and part of AZ today. It was kept very quiet and his actual schedule was not known- he was supposed to be somewhere I was today and did not show up there after all, but went a couple of places that weren’t mentioned. Probably smart on his part, no need to be a target of the cartel if you can avoid it. The cartel shooters have no problem with killing their own politicians so it would not be out of the realm for them to begin targeting officials here.

There has been a step up in security in my area- I have seen National Guard the past couple of days, State Police, and Deputies from the Sheriff’s office. The extra enforcement on the border was not here as soon as it was claimed in the media but is here now.
