CALLAWAY Police arrested a sixth-grade student Monday at the request of the boys parents, after he said he stole and then gave away more than $7,000 worth of his mothers jewelry.
The boy told police he gave a classmate at Everett Middle School a white gold ring and a diamond ring, which he had taken from his mothers jewelry box the previous week. When he asked the girl to return the jewelry, she gave back the white gold ring but said she had lost the diamond ring, according to a Bay County Sheriffs Office report.
The boy gave a sapphire ring to another friend who, when asked, said he had given it to a female classmate, according to the report. Another boy told his friend that he could have his mothers emerald and sapphire ring back if he gave him a reward.
The boys stepfather was adamant about filing charges, police reported, so the deputy placed (him) into handcufffs (double locked) and placed him in my patrol vehicle.
Police booked the student into the Bay County Jail on grand theft charges, and then took him to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Give away the wealth or prized possessions of OTHERS to look good.
Tough love
I used to live there when I was stationed at Tyndall AFB...the area close to Everett MS can be a rough neighborhood
I haven’t been around there since 2001, but some things never change I guess.
Wish all parents had the courage to do things like this.
I’m willing to bet the parents have had a lot of issues with this kid prior to this.
“Another boy told his friend that he could have his mothers emerald and sapphire ring back if he gave him a reward. “
Arrest him for accepting stolen property!
The police should explain the law to this little punk as they lead him off to juvie in handcuffs.
"Spare the rod, spoil the child."
that would be “stepfather” not “dad” who insisted on the boy thief being handcuffed and hauled away
I understand that, but if you have parental authority to make that request than you should have a hand in discipline or make the boys biological father do it.
I got there in 2001 and left 2004
This is not uncommon.
Twice in my life I’ve run into “little girls” who have raided a family jewelry box. Both were about 9 at the time. In both cases the jewelry was found, once by family and it was just brought back - with a story the perpetrator “found” it.
Once the correction worked, once I still don’t trust the person. This kid is older.
IMHO, it’s a family affair - and if the child needs a lesson, he needs a lesson.
That was all I had to read to figure out what was going on here--with the kid and with the "parent" as well.
My son did this though he was a couple of years younger than the boy in this article.
He gave away an amethyst ring and a garnet bracelet to a little girl he liked.
I got the ring back but not the bracelet.
I just went into his room and picked two of his favorite toys and gave them away, never happened again.
Did no one else notice nothing happened until AFTER they couldn't recover it all?
That’s a weird title - why “sixth-grader”. Why not “child” or “son”?
