April 10 Mitt Romney Wins Presidential Straw Poll at Republican Leadership Conference
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll by one vote over Rep. Ron Paul, 438-437.
The person who didn't attend the Southern Republican Leadership Conference won the 2012 GOP presidential straw poll.
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll by one vote over Rep. Ron Paul, 438-437.
Sarah Palin finished in third place with 330 votes, while Newt Gingrich rounded it out with 321 votes.
Several potential candidates addressed the three-day gathering which ended Saturday.
Eyeing another presidential bid, Texas Rep. Ron Paul told Republican activists that "the American people have awoken" because Washington won't address the nation's fiscal crisis.
Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., speaks at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, Saturday, April 10, 2010. (AP) Paul ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008.
Paul brought to the event a large contingent of boisterous supporters. Following Paul's lead, they booed some traditional GOP policies that lead to government spending.
"The reason why the American people have awoken ... is because the country is broke and the people in Washington won't admit it," Paul said.
Evoking the memory of Hurricane Katrina, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour told Republicans that the policies of President Obama and other Democrats are a "man-made disaster."
He took the stage after a slick video paid homage to Barbour himself and his fellow GOP governors.
After recalling the 2005 hurricane, Barbour said, "Today we're here because we know we have to deal with a man-made disaster."
Barbour has not declared his intentions for the 2012 White House race.
Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, considered by GOP leaders to be a potential 2012 presidential candidate, vowed that House Republicans will repeal Obama's health care overhaul law "lock, stock and barrel."

Mitt: Enjoy the “victory”. These straw polls will be the only victories for you this time around. Closet socialists won’t pass the sniff test this time. The fact you “won” under a false front group “Evangelicals” further emphasizes how you are buying votes. You beat Ron Paul by one vote: another vote buyer.
I have a suggestion for these straw polls: if group vote purchasing occurs, the candidate should be disqualified and removed from the list.
RomneyCARE-creator, vote-buying, Mitt Romney:
Now that Romneycare is national, ready to hurt
three hundred million, a little self examination is in order for you.
You may want to ask yourself if I had spent my time promoting
RomneyCare and Mitt Romney, could not I have garnered more support
of both Mr. Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney?
= 8 years of 0bama. Ugh.
I have a funny feeling that Romney will be a leading contender in the primaries leading up to the convention and that, due to his ego, will stay in the limelight doing what ever he can to undermine what I believe will be the eventual conservative nominee. Possibly even running as an eventual independent, splitting the voting base and allowing Obama a win.
This guy, just based on the fund raising and planning he has put in plus the time he has spent, seems like feels he is owed the presidential nomination because he is next in line - like Dole, like McLaim.
I just have a bad feeling about this guy and his impact on the Presidential election for the ‘Pubs.
If that’s the field, I’m staying at the house.
If you and other thumb-sucking Repubs (i.e. those who do not get precisely 'who' and what you want per this election and so you stay home) choose to not to vote; there well may NOT be another election in America's future - whereby you could ultimately exercise your better choice.
This is not as simple as soc.lite/versus Marxism. We have a frickin impostor President. He is proven enemy. His efforts defy our Constitution and American Will. He is an enemy; a lover - and worse, an enabler - of radical Islam (that should scare the hell out of you!) and he is chopping off, bit by bit; America's legs so as to have us on not on our knees, but totally prostrate, for God's sake. We have an America-hating President who wants to 'change' America into 'his most un-American image'. And this man cannot get his surgery on America, done fast enough.
We could survive a RINO and easily by comparison; as we bring in Conservative reinforcements; people like Marco Rubio; Lt. Col. Allen West; and host of new Leaders who are true patriots; while keeping those who demonstrate same.
We will lose ALL possibilities, for a safe, viable, restored future; should Obama capture another four years; and who knows what after that.
Think it utterly insane - and more than selfish - to watch this man destroy our Military; debase our soldiers; subvert our schools - and our children's education - as well, watch him destroy our economy; our future; our healthcare. (We can at least debate and resist Romneycare; less chance with Obama criminals in power, for sure.)
Some humility would go a long way here per one's vote - rather than what appears, more a 'self-pride' per one's choice. NO one, IMHO. . .can NOT vote against Obama and say they did their best for America. This is a curtain call. . .be there; or be with our worst America-hating enemies.
**************
(This election is not just about 'you' and 'who' fits your ideal. It IS about getting our worst enemies out of our White House; out of our Congress; and out of our Country, if need be. Patience required here! It will pay off; but not, if the the man who would be King. . .becomes one.
No question, IMHO; Obama can beg and steal votes; but he can win, ONLY if good citizens - voters - fail their country. We are in dire straights. We have a future to save; vote - or be with the enemy.
Might need to consider another location, however.
Let us get in our best for Congress; who knows; Marco Rubio might be ready for prime-time in two years. Maybe as VP; I don't know. Mitt is 'milk toast'- at least as a candidate - and would be a set back; but with enough Conservatives to fill up Congress; it would matter less.
Am wondering where Sarah is planning to be? Am betting Sarah, not Mitt; running on what would be a third Party/Tea Party. This would as huge as it is dangerous. Am wondering if her placating Repubs by serving McCain (and making nice to Steele, for whatever reason(?)) is designed to win her favor 'within' Party; rather than from outside the walls of RNC.
My head spins at the possibilites; and spins more at those issues that could jeopardize any future, whatsever; if we are not careful.
Where are all the true conservative options....not worthy of inclusion I see.
Would offer that if Sara not the frontrunner for Repub Party; that we take a page from hew own book - swallow some political pride and support whomever is our candidate. Hope as well; if she fails to win nomination; that Sarah does not go 'third Party'; rather that she continue to move cause forward by her extra-government participation. Suspect she would be pulled in, 'large-capacity' by Repub Administration; if we have one, that is.
And so it is, I have a problem with
"But, I'm not going to root for the "anything but obama" candidate" - albeit FOR the very reason you state. . ." oh no; this time in history is way too important to get another RINO (Mitt, Huckaby) in there, Ron Paul is a kook, and I don't think Newt is electable. I haven't heard enough from Pawlenty yet to make a decision, and I don't know much about any of the others. But I do know if it has the faintest smell of democrat/liberal about it, I'm hanging out at the house."
Again; agree with main premise per Repub options; just not your conclusion per you not voting. . .and of course, if Sara not a win' there is a VP choice to consider that may make decision here, more palatable.

Cannot disagree more!
As I mentioned; a whole lot easier fighting 'Romney Care' than Obamacare. And do not recall that this program was misrepped and crammed down the throats of citizens of Massachussetts, who ARE, by majority, Liberal. (This was a 'State initiative'; and they can fight it's negatives at State level.) As a prototype - at least, the mistakes are clear; as are the better remedies. Obamacare determinedly guarantees nothing more than the disaterous, irretrievable 'slippery slope', into a healthcare hell.
Most importantly; Mitt - nor any Repub - does not bring into our White House and into upper eschelons of power; the 'worst elements' of radical Leftism; including street people whose singular personal redemption is community organizing ACORN. . .Union thugs/SEIO/communists/Marxists et al.
If that is not frightening enough; consider the worst elements of Islam and Nation of Islam. (Doubt Mitt's spiritual ' Advisor' cold match the hateful racist and historical degradation that Rev.Wright shares with Obama (still.) Doubt, as well, that Mitt has 'spiritual' influences in his life like that of Gulen. . .(one of Obama's Advisor's is a disciple and so part of 'Gulen Movement') and not surprised if Gulen might be on Obama's Blackberry phone/pray/Allah/donate list. (There are more here of course.) In addition; we do know that Mitt - nor hopefully ANY Republican - suffers the delusions of CAIR. . .
We do have, by Obama's Associations, an Islam-enabling President; and by consequence; a major threat and daily assault, from radical Islam; efforts emowered from the radical Left. Obama has yet to observe ANY Muslim; or Muslim Country; that he could not praise/defend/excuse. The radical Islamist threat to America compounds the dangers we face a thousand-fold; if not more. We can duly take note of Obama determinedly advancing the worst and most dangerous of agendas, on behalf of those who stand behind that threat!
In our White House; by Obama's czar's team; his list; his Advisors; his policy makers; we have the worst of the worst. Mitt and Obama are NOT equals per their 'progressivism'; not by their values; nor by their 'vision 'for' America. All to say, sorry, but they do not share same playing field! The end result could not/would, per election outcome, '"be the same"!
Sad to have to make praise from what should not even be a thought. That a candidate IS in fact, an American. Add to that; believe; again, like most decent Repubs; Mitt has family values; spiritual values et al. . .and he has an appreciation for our Constitution - unlike current WH occupant. His 'progressive instincts' aside; he believes in the virtues of Capitalism. He has a an appreciation for the 'moral fabric' of America. And again; incredible to have to raise this, in defense of any American - that we can celebrate that this Republican is NOT a communist; not an Alynskyite!
Despite Mitt's negatives; this makes him a paragon of political virtue; compared to the debased and degraded and abominable, subversive Islamist, Obama. it should make a 'clear' win for any Republican IMHO. . .
(As much as I disliked RINO McCain; have to say; given all his RINO ignorance; we would still, be a safer, more economically viable country; had he won; and Obama lost, IMHO. Again, we have much to work with from 'ground up' and so there is hope. . .but have to keep 'R's in place!)
Agree. Sarah IS a 'private citizen'; but speaking almost daily, to millions of potential voters - who supported her as 'candidate' in past election and desperately hope to in next; raises her beyond "Mrs. Palin". Clearly; she is under no obligation; but as candidate or not; she is potent arbiter for whomever is the Republican candidate or at least whomever, these people will support; be it gratuitously or enthusiastically or not at all.
That said, was only referencing 'higher call' as to what I think was a 'higher obligation to people/Country; versus her choice to endorse RINO McCain.
Do think her intent right now is to provide a 'guiding Conservative voice' and hope the RNC 'gets it' and more voters, 'get it'.
If they do not; she may well be a candidate. . .though I hope she only takes bid from Republican Party; and waits until another time; if she does not get one. And meantime; she can continue to provide a great deal more; as a guiding voice for Conservatism. And maybe influential posts in a Repub Administration. . .while she decides 'next move'. (Think Independent/third Party way too much of a risk/threat to Repub win.)
