WARSAW, Poland — Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died Saturday in a plane crash in Russia, was a one-time anti-communist activist who teamed up with his twin brother to take his country in a nationalist, conservative direction.

His opponents, however, viewed him as narrow-minded, provincial and overzealous in his drive to cleanse the country of the influence of former communists. And he drew criticism from human rights groups for trying to stop a gay-rights parade through Poland's capital.

Kaczynski was a firm friend of Poland's Jewish community, which has enjoyed a revival in recent years after it was nearly wiped out in the Holocaust and later suffered from communist-era repression.

It may sound silly, but as soon as I found out about this I thought about Putin being involved in some way. I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy nut, but I just don’t put anything past him.

Don’t worry, Putin is on the job and he will get to the bottom of the plane crash...just after he helps OJ find the real killers.

It rests on determining why the pilot chose to ignore the ATC warnings to re-route the flight due to the foggy weather.

“is opponents...ewed him as narrow-minded, provincial and overzealous in his drive to cleanse the country of the influence of former communists.”

Wow, sounds like Joe McCarthy.

The man now in charge apparently has been endorsed by Lech Walesa and has a similar dissident background, including imprisonment. Hopefully, all of the replacements are also anti-communists.

Good to hear. Hopefully this event will help stiffen the resolve of the Polish people to stay the course.

That is very strange isn't it! I have a pretty good gut instinct and my instinct is telling me that this has Putin written all over it!

And to top it off they were headed off to a ceremony being held to honor the Polish soldiers executed by Stalin.

Anti-Communist, Pro-U.S., Pro-Missile Defense, Pro-Marriage, Pro-Israel, Anti-EU

The vast majority of Polish people are more pro-American than Obama and the rest of the damn democrats.

Poland has lost some great people in this terrible disaster, and it's truly a shame.

Prayers for the families.

Pro-U.S.

That would make him anti-DumBO.

HAD TO BE ELIMINATED.

Does David Axelrod have an alibi?

I hope that Dubya can go to Poland to pay his respects. I know how much he loves the Polish people.

Interesting link, thanks. I don’t know why it was so important to do this and put all those VIPs on the same plane. Had they ever gone to russia to do this before?

“THE KATYN MASSACRES, in which 22,000 Polish officers, policemen, and civil servants were murdered by the NKVD (Soviet Secret Police), are probably the most notoriously senseless of Stalin’s crimes.
-snip-
Regardless of whether Putin’s fingerprints end up being on this plane crash, a visit to Russia by a pro-western president of Poland intended to commemorate the mass murder of tens of thousands of Polish officers at the hands of Stalin’s Secret Police would likely be perceived by Putin as a blatant slap in the face to everything he fervently reveres.”
