India has a similiar problem.

Under Indian laws, ultrasound tests to determine the gender of a fetus have been illegal since the mid 1990s. But the practice continues - doctors and medical facilities who've spent the money to buy sonogram equipment know that gender testing is a lucrative source of income to recover the cost of the sonogram purchase.
