Not one black man has ever led an expedition of great discovery. Correct me if I an wrong but I do not remember a single discovery of a new land, new place, or any expedition of exploring the unknown parts of the world ever being led by a black person.
This came to mind as I was in a discussing with several black friends about the space program. Not one of them saw any value, past or present, in our nations space program. They all had the same comment, that they thought the money could be better spent right here at home on the people. When I pushed them on this they admitted they meant social entitlement programs.
I really had to shake my head and walk off. These folks can't see past the end of their nose. If Christopher Columbus had been black the native Americans would be a happy independent continental nation. So bring on the facts and please correct me if I am wrong. It seems that if they can't see it them it does not exist.

Oh you didn’t hear about the great explorer Al Maki Maki Wutu Maki?? He of present-day Johannesburgh led a mighty expedition all the way to present-day Somalia and returned with bountiful slaves!
/s
Oh you said exploration.

Well humanity started out in Africa. The Europeans and Asians are the decedents of the people who explored and colonized new lands. Africans are the decedents of the people who stayed behind. So perhaps there is some gene that sends a shot of happy juice into the brain when you discover something new. Curiosity may be genetic.

I wonder why it is that John Glenn did not sign. Partisan support for the one in the White House maybe?
It is unfortunate your friends feel the way they do. I guess they get no inspiration from the African American astronauts who have managed to reach for the stars. If there were no space program (on which the US spends a relatively tiny amount of money) then many minority and underprivileged kids will not be able to dream of flying in space or taking part in this lofty and exciting program. Very sad, IMO.
