A school superintendent in New Jersey says a "misunderstanding" led an elementary school teacher to mandate that all students -- including young boys -- dress as women in a now-canceled fashion show to honor Women's History Month.
Maple Shade Township School Superintendent Michael Livengood said the show, which had been scheduled for Friday at Maude Wilkins Elementary School, has been canceled.
"I wish the letter had been clearer and had been worded differently," Livengood told FoxNews.com, referring to a letter sent home to the children's parents last week informing them of the assignment. "But it was a misunderstanding. It was meant to demonstrate students' awareness in women's roles, and along with that, their changes in fashion over time."
In a 16-page packet sent home with students, teacher Tonya Uibel alerted parents that all students in her third grade class would have to participate in the activity, since it would be graded as an "end of unit" assignment.
"If your child is a young man, he does not have to wear a dress or skirt, as there are many time periods where women wore jeans, pants and trousers. However, each child must be able to express what time period their outfit is from. Most of all, your child should have fun creating their outfit and learning about how women's clothing has changed!"

When I was eight years old, I had never heard the word homosexual, let alone had a clue what it meant.
I think it was a misunderstanding that the teacher and the superintendant were ever hired.
What does this have to do with education?
My first reaction was that when I was a kid, we thought that dressing up as a girl was a good joke. But not after decades of “gay rights,” thank you. So, it might have been fun before the LGBT folks poisoned the well.
But having read the story, I wonder. Mandatory cross dressing for Women’s History Month? How is that teaching anyone anything they should be learning in school? Other than mandatory political correctness?
The sad thing is that the State of New Jersey is probably spending over $124,000 to employ Tonya Uibel, and this is the quality of work they get for their money!

Home schooling sure does sound better and better. I have my son in Christian school but am appalled by some of the things he picks up there because there are children in the school whose parents allow their 6 year old children to be exposed to the Hollywood filth they themselves watch.
In this sick world, because of insidiously bad parenting, home schooling is the only way you can shelter their innocence at least until they are older.
No kidding. We were required to take guitar and piano in music class while in grades 6-8. You could pass the class by playing the selected songs competently. However, if you wanted an “A” you had to sing the song, as well. I took the downgrade to avoid ridicule and embarrassment. Never regretted it.
When was that, and what school did you go to? I’ve been wanting to learn how to play piano.
The period costumes are a great idea for a general history lesson, connecting what students see in paintings and photographs to different eras. To apply it to only one gender is stupid and sexist.

“Misunderstanding” my big toe. That teacher insisted on this they refused parents demands to not make it mandatory.
Somebody should be fired over this. Either teacher, the principle or the superintendant. The highest level administrator that knew about this plan and did not put a stop to it is culpable.
I have absolutely no clue how this would help anyone learn about the contribution of women. It’s rather sexist to celebrate women with what boils down to a fashion show. They could have studied the lives of pioneer women, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, etc. But this teacher wants the kids to learn the value of women is completely superficial.

Exactly how it should be. This should be addressed at home if the parents want to do it. The Principal should be fired.
