Anger as Arizona lawmakers pass immigration bill

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Immigrant rights groups Wednesday slammed Arizona lawmakers after they approved a bill which will allow police officers to determine whether suspects are in the United States legally.

Arizona's House of Representatives passed the bill by a margin of 35 votes to 21 during a session on Tuesday, the legislature's website showed, mirroring a similar measure passed by the border state's Senate earlier this year.

The bill will now proceed to Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer to be signed into law.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor offense for an individual to lack proper immigration paperwork and also allows police officers to determine someone's immigration status if they believe he or she could be an illegal immigrant.

Currently police can only ask about an individual's immigration status if they are suspected of involvement in another crime.

However critics say the bill will transform Arizona into a "police state" and even sections of law enforcement have voiced fears it could harm relations between police and the immigrant community.

Chris Newman, Legal Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which campaigns on behalf of day laborers in the United States, called on Governor Brewer to veto the bill, which he described as "odious" and "unwise."

"Does this mean that as an American citizen, I have to carry my papers if I travel to Arizona?"

If you drive there, you'd be obligated to possess a driver's license. Same as if you went to Mexico (where travel insurance and a passport for return would be required too).

Correct! Would you go to Italy or China and blatantly break their laws? Just because some on is a foreigner does not give that person the right to ignore the laws of a nation.

Maybe they'll "devastate" the Arizona economy and just leave. That would really teach us a lesson!!! (sarc/)

'RAT politicians and these "immigrant rights" clowns really crack me up. Our unemployment rate here is 9.7.

Everyone I know here in Arizona is absolutely ecstatic over this law.

Arizona lawmakers approve strict immigration law ... to make life miserable for immigrants so that they leave the state," said Chris Newman

Brewer is expected to sign it.

Another piece of legislation coming is making La Raza studies illegal in schools.

Did I read that right? It’s a “misdemeanor”? They’re breaking federal law - deport them.

misdemeanor allows them to arrest the illegal, fingerprint them, and hand them over to the feds to deport as criminals.

The left decries the state nullification movement as “secessionist” or “seditious”,

but they don’t bat an eye at La Raza saying they
are going to “take back” the entire western part
of the USA.

You poor, poor people. Just imagine - wages going up, and plenty of jobs available to Americans who want to work! What will you do with this economic devastation?

BTW... I hear there are around 460,000 illegals in AZ. I wonder how that will impact unemployment and other spending. Something people don’t think about is how much money is sent to foreign countries and not spent in the state. Then there is the money spent on education and on health care and accidents, etc.

Should be interesting to see what happens. don’t these laws kick in in 90 days?

The neat thing about this is
that they won’t have to deport but half a percent
of them, and 90% of the rest will simply leave.

Good deal,, why should parents and taxpayers support “curriculum” that seek to eventually overthrow our sovereign claim to the continent.

A large number left when the employer sanction law was passed. The community college lost students and now there are schools that are being closed because of the enrollment drops. It was also said that traffic to Mexico increased as well as people going to the Mexican consulate to make arrangements to get their kids enrolled in school in Mexico. Then there were those who went to Texas....

Awesome. Great job AZ. Now dump McCain. I think the passage of this law exposes McCain.
