As long as SC has open primaries, the Democrats will cross over and keep him there. His challenger in 08 ran as a Democrat. (That challenger was the only Democrat I have ever supported for any office higher than county sheriff.)
Open primaries are one of the reasons the R’s are called “the stupid party.”
