The “missiles” are airliners. You can see their navigation strobe lights blinking before the meteor flares, and when the meteor flare lights up the sky the contrails of the airliners are visible.

Thank you, Hawkboy. Not missile trails—chem-trails! HA!
:-)

Our friend, Tom, and older fellow who used to work in missile defense/guidance systems had this to say:

“These events are generally much smaller than they appear. The rate of consumption of the material in an earthbound object is huge. For even a small object the size of a golf ball or baseball, when consumed so totally in such a short time, an enormous amount of light, and/or sound, is emitted.
To be honest, I feel like any large foreign object would leave MUCH more debris and resultant damage to the impact area, if only the size of a basketball (made of a solid material).
I don’t remember if I told you that I was involved with lifting ICBMs from Utah and firing them back into the atmosphere over Texas. Then, the war heads were fired, accelerating then to an even greater velocity.
NO ONE EVER complained to anyone about the Fire-balls, since there were none. In other words, the velocities were too small to create enough friction to consume them.
My Thoughts!! Debris will be found miles from the apparent position of the object and will be of “outer space type material”, consistent with Solar system materials.”
