The collapse of South Dakota Democrats
Hot Air ^ | APRIL 17, 2010 | ED MORRISSEY

Posted on 04/17/2010 7:40:59 AM PDT by RobinMasters

Less than ten years ago, a Democrat from South Dakota ran the US Senate. Just six years ago, Tom Daschle still led Senate Democrats as minority leader. Now, in 2010, South Dakota Democrats won’t even present a candidate to run against the man who unseated Daschle in one of the strangest and most total collapses in political history. My friend Dr. Eric Ostermeier at Smart Politics tries to make sense of the situation:

While South Dakota has long been a Republican stronghold in state politics and presidential elections, the Democratic Party has performed quite competitively in the Mount Rushmore State in Congressional races for several decades.

However, in what can only be described as an embarrassment for Democrats, the Party’s failure to field a candidate in the U.S. Senate contest against 1-term GOP incumbent John Thune marks the first time in 34 contests since popular vote U.S. Senate elections were introduced in 1914 that a Democratic candidate has failed to appear on the ballot in South Dakota. …

When can Tim Johnson (D) be voted out out? The sooner the better.

Who would run when there won't be any campaign money?

The democrats will not want to throw money at a long shot candidate in South Dakota. The president just signed the most proabortion piece of legislation in our history with the healthcare plan and South Dakota is a staunchly prolife state. They would be wise not to spend anything where they have no chance of winning.

Similar story here in Wyoming despite have a very popular rat governor who is not running for reelection the rats can’t find anyone who is willing to run this year. It’s amusing to watch.

They have reached their limit in trusting the Democrats. It’s not the old Democrat Party today.....most are crooks and the farmers of South Dakota are figuring out that they have been lied to for years. They are an independent group of people and hard workers and once the Democrats loose their trust, it will be years before they ever get back in power.

With the Byron Dorgan cut-and-run, North Dakota is poised to follow South Dakota’s lead. In November, Rep. Pomeroy (D)will likely be voted out of office. In 2012 Conrad (D), our other senator, should lose to a strong Republican candidate. ND could see a total switch from D to R in our three congressmen.

Can’t you Badgers up there in Wisconsin find someone to depose that Commie Feingold?

Actually, I think it was vote fraud on the Indian reservations which put Abourezk and then Daschle in the Senate from S.D. and the internet and some brave souls put an end to that.

Pubbies would do well to remember that after the next election.

It’s important to make sure Republican candidates are conservatives; not RINOS.

All the lefty’s have to do is put up a candidate that promises stuff in the farm bill, some indians goodies and some stuff for the big NYC banks that work there and boom they win again. Farmers to me seem to be staunch conservatives that forget about that when its time for their pocketbooks.

Never happen, Pomeroy is a complete boob, and I would do back flips if he got beat, just doubt it will happen. Conrad will be a ND Senator for as long as he wants. North Dakota loves their Pork, and Conrad delivers. Hope your right though GOP_Party_Animal.

Absolutely correct! It was vote fraud that brought and kept Dashle in office. Not sure about Abourezk, but I can't believe South Dakotans actually liked that guy. Now the true state many of America's supposedly fair elections can be seen as nothing but Democrat Party vote fraud. There is no way that the Democrat Party represents the majority of people in America.

???

Worse then that, Daschle and McGovern both won on recounts.
Johnson won on some shady computer malfunction BS till they had the number of votes needed to win

Not as long as the state GOP won’t back anyone with even a faintly conservative platform. All they can respond to is Tommy Thompson and anyone who was part of his administration.

People actually think Finegold is centrist!

Anyone running against any donk here has to self-finance. Then they have to find some way of being heard, because the media is strongly progressive.

Then, just like SoDak, there are farmers who vote donk for the supports, in the national elections, but vote conservative locally.

If you are in business, you think 3x before even making a political comment. If you run as a conservative, you will lose customers, fast. This includes running at the local level, such as school board, but we usually do manage to get a few conservatives into the state legislature and on the county boards.

That said, we will vote for Scott Walker in the primary. If he loses, we will still vote straight GOP ticket. We will also vote for Wall, but I doubt he can win.

Things may be changing. I do hear rumblings, but I also hear people who just do not want to have to think about politics, much less discuss it, even with family. They simply want to be able to trust that they have elected people who will utilize common sense. It is going to take a lot of personal hardship for them to change.

I remember the two guys who were blogging the race, how much trouble they had trying to get on the reservation to monitor the election and how a Daschle friendly judge looked like he was going to put his fingers on the scale of justice until he realized they were live blogging in his courtroom and the jig was up.

I rad an account of Abourezk’s first run and he worked those reservations ans greased the leaders’ palms and I have to think he taught his aide Daschle just how to do it.
