Aborting the 'Wrong' Baby?
Christian Post ^ | 4/16/10 | R. Albert Mohler, Jr

The news out of Sarasota, Florida caught many people by surprise. A doctor in the city has lost his license because he aborted what is now described as the “wrong” baby. Back in 2006, Dr. Matthew Kachinas had been asked to perform an abortion on a baby that had been identified as having Down syndrome and other congenital defects. Instead, the doctor aborted that baby’s healthy twin.

As reported in The Miami Herald:

A Sarasota doctor has lost his license for mistakenly aborting a healthy twin during a procedure targeting a deformed fetus. Immediately after the Florida Board of Medicine’s decision Saturday, Dr. Matthew Kachinas was involuntarily hospitalized because he said he planned to commit suicide. Kachinas had blamed faulty ultrasound equipment for the 2006 mistake. He was targeting a fetus with Down syndrome and signs of a heart defect.

CBS News added further details: “The woman had asked the doctor to perform a selective termination procedure on the male fetus, which had congenital defects. An ultrasound later showed that the other fetus, a female that did not appear to have medical problems, had been terminated.”

What are we to make of this? We now know that the vast majority of babies identified prenatally as carrying the genetic markers for Down syndrome are aborted. National statistics indicate that 80-90% of such babies are now aborted - meaning that we have launched a search and destroy mission on Down syndrome babies in the womb.

The situation with Dr. Kachinas reveals the horribly confused morality that marks modern America and, in far too many cases, the practice of medicine. This doctor was asked to perform what is now euphemistically called a “selective reduction.” Instead, he aborted “the wrong baby,” killing a healthy baby instead of the baby identified as carrying the markers for Down syndrome.

Consider what this means for the sanctity of human life. We are now looking at babies as consumer products. We will accept babies that meet our specified qualifications, and abort when medical tests or other factors reveal that the baby does not meet our standards. Human life is reduced to just another consumer product subject to consumer preferences and demand.

Do we recognize what this means? The abortion of Down syndrome babies is a scandal of the first degree, and this nation is growing more complacent and complicit in this scandal by the day. Beyond this, we can be certain that babies are now being targeted in the womb for reasons far beyond Down syndrome. Specialists working with autism are concerned that forthcoming genetic tests will put babies who carry markers for autism next on the list for prenatal search and destroy missions.

This news story out of Florida is a warning to the entire nation. What is the real scandal here - that this doctor was ready to kill a baby with Down syndrome, or merely that he aborted “the wrong baby?”

The answer to that question will tell us all we need to know about the conscience of the age.

This is what disturbs me about these identification of DNA markers that "cause" certain diseases. For many (not all), he "cure" is to kill the baby in utero.

Oops, I meant did the boy actually have Downs and a heart problem? Or did they go back and terminate him, too?

When the OB-GYN asked us if we wanted to test for Downs, we told him absolutely not because we wouldn’t abort even if.

Same here. They kept pushing it, and we kept saying "No". They finally got it.

They would probably want that made illegal. Then again, they probably aren’t that worried because, though they will NEVER admit it, they realize that no such gene exists.

All he did was “selectively terminate” the wrong “fetal tissue.” Why is the mother bothered?

My prayers for this doctor. I pray that his guilt will be assuaged by turning his life over the the Lord, and repenting for his sins. I believe this is the only way he will overcome his suicidal intentions at this point.

Don’t know what else to say, really... It all just makes me sick — especially when I recall that with my first her AFP numbers were REALLY high possibly indicating Spina Bifida. Thank God they had what were called “Level II” ultrasounds by then (1991) and via the ultrasound we were able to confirm that my daughter was totally healthy despite the “bad” results on the blood test. (We (the technician and I) counted her fingers and toes, and were able to see her eyes starting to develop, and confirmed her spine and skull were developing as they were supposed to — I was about 17 weeks along.) My daughter is now 18 years old, and as healthy as can be - Praise God!

No. It was boy/girl twins. The boy was ‘deformed’ (!) because he showed the probability of Downs and a heart problem. The girl was healthy.

The doctor killed the healthy girl child ‘accidentally’. Someone a few posts before this said the parents also had the boy killed. :*( :*(

Oh geez, that makes me even more sick, can you imagine. Having trouble getting pregnant and then opting for an abortion??? How twisted, sick and selfish is that? I've heard there are people on waiting list to adopt down's babies. And even it if weren't it's just plan evil to eliminate a child because it's inconvenient. Having a special needs child, although difficult isn't the end of the world. I know, because I have only one child and she's learning disabled. Abortion never solves any problems, it only creates worse ones.

Yea, there really isn't any difference between what Hitler did with the Jews and others and what we are doing in the abortion mills. The end results are the same, death and an unholy alliance with evil.

Exactly! My Dr. asked us this simple question....."What would you do with the information?" I didn't have the test with either pregnancy-and we have twins too.

I take care of a lot of Downs babies; most of the parents have the info, so they have done a lot of research and are prepared; so it’s not only used for abortion.

That’s right. They love to manipulate the language so the public will be more accepting.

Pro-Abortion = Pro-Choice
Unborn child, baby = zygote, embryo, fetus
Abortion = termination, selective reduction
Abortion Clinics = Planned Parenthood, women’s health centers
Euthanasia = assisted suicide, right to die

I read in another article on this that she went back and had the downs baby aborted too:

http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/290699

They both are dead. I have no sympathy for her whatsoever. I only feel pity that she had no moral qualms about aborting her child with Downs syndrome. Suppose the girl had lived; wouldn’t she be horrified to learn her parents had had her own brother killed in the womb right next to her? Heck, if she developed a health problem or was injured in some way down the road, would they have wanted to get rid of her? They probably would deny such a thing, but what is the difference between killing a person for medical conditions before birth or after birth? The same person is being killed. The mere difference is age, size, and location.

I think the article raised a good point when it asked what the real scandal is. Is the scandal that the “wrong” baby was aborted, or is the scandal that a “doctor” is legally allowed to kill a helpless child in the earliest stages of his life for not being “perfect” in the eyes of society?

With my twin pregnancy (IVF), my OB just said, “I’m not even going to bother to ask you because I know you’ll just say NO!”

I LOVE that doctor. :-) She’s the greatest.

Oh, what a great doctor! My twins were a complete surprise (blessing). I had no idea until a sonogram at 18 weeks. I thought I was on Candid Camera when they told me!
