the label “conservative” isn’t very helpful...because it can also mean allegiance to the original state, and in that sense, in Russia the conservative candidates after the fall of the Soviet Union were the communists. while the progressive candidates were the ones pushing for change and free markets.

I am aware of that. I was using ‘conservative’ in the sense we normally think of most of us on this thread. I think of it more in line with my tagline: ‘...steeped in the Constitutional legacy handed down by the Founders’.

Since America has had but a single constitution and system of government (until Obama), American conservatism truly strives to preserves the founding fathers’ precepts. So it can be said to be pire. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the United States is the oldest constutional republic in the world.
