President Obama’s sweet tooth boosts export of salt from Wales

Salt from Wales used to make President Obama’s favourite caramel has helped to boost British food export figures for the fifth consecutive year.

The President’s passion for Smoked Salt Caramels, produced by the artisan confectioner Fran’s Chocolates of Seattle, is one of the successful trade stories which led to total food and drink exports last year being valued at £9.65 billion.

The increased sales were just 4.4 per cent, but in a difficult year because of the economic downturn and when other manufacturing sectors suffered an overseas sales slump of 11.8 per cent, the performance has lifted morale among entrepreneurs in the food industry....

The sweet has been a favourite for four years after one of his original campaign team, who hails from seattle, gave him a box as a present. These caramels are now handed out to visitors to the White House.

Those caramels cost $24 for a 6 ounce box of 20 pieces. A bit over a dollar a pop for caramels that price out at $64 a pound!!

It's a leafy green with a peppery bite, and a staple of Mediterranean cuisine. It's the only thing I agree with Obama on (I was an arugula fan long before this fraud rolled into Washington!).
