It’s a single-vendor solution, and has all the problems of writing code in PL/I. While it is an improvement on writing code in C++, it is a case of Microsoft answering the question in a highly selective way that maximizes their lock-in of developers and users....

just as PL/I attempted to do.

Right now I don’t mind being “locked in”. Plus it’s not like I don’t know how to use other languages. It’s just that I prefer c#.

I guess if Mac ever gets a large enough desktop share I will learn something on their side of the fence.

While C is/was an OK language for putting up kernels on PDP-11’s, it is a horrible application language.

C (or, at least C++) is flexible enough to be as horrible or not as you want to make it. Depending on the libraries and IDE (GUI aids) used, C/C++ isn't nasty at all for application development. It's what I do. (Borland C++ Builder)

Ah, I wondered if you were a Microsoft developer. It was either that or an employee. :)

You're pretty safe. I doubt that the Mac will ever get more than about 10% worldwide, or maybe 15% US. If they were ever to hit 20%, Apple would have to do business differently, and would stop being the Apple we know today.

Their business model is a niche model, because they don't produce cheap crap, which comprises the lower 3/4 of the consumer/commercial market. They are a mid-high vendor, period.

So depending on what "large enough" is for you, I suspect you'll be able to stay locked in for as long as Windows continues to roll along, with PC vendors supplying the vast majority with the low-end stuff they're willing to pay for, and Apple supplying their mid-high market for those who are willing to pay for it.

Everybody's happy.

So are you saying all windows PC’s are cheap? If so that’s wrong. There are high-end PCs as well as low end. That’s the beauty of it...you can buy what you want.

Now granted most will be the cheap stuff, but there’s nothing wrong with that. And some will be the high-end stuff...nothing wrong with that either. And the beauty of it is my code will run on both just fine.

Of course not (you do love putting words in my mouth). I've owned a score of mid-high-end Windows machines over the years. Most ran great, typical life over eight years. I don't buy cheap stuff; well, very rarely. :)

Yep, we are in total agreement.

And these days, your code will run just fine on a Mac too, either on the hardware (BootCamp) or in a VM (assuming you're not making too many explicit hardware assumptions).

I've been writing software and designing/building hardware since the early 70's, so believe me, I have some perspective on the current market and what's cheap and what's not.
