THE FIRST VOLUNTEERS

Even before the War of Independence, the Haganah recognized the need for guidance from professionally trained soldiers with battlefield experience to help transform the defense force into a full-fledged military organization. The need became even more acute with the outbreak of hostilities in the first period of the war, towards the end of 1947.

The first volunteers, some 240 men, operated within the framework of the Mossad l’Aliyah Bet, the organization bringing “illegal immigrants” to Mandatory Palestine.

Most of these volunteers were Americans, 16 were
10 Machalniks who arrived on the Pan York in
August 1948. Most were posted to the
7th Brigade.

Jack Kesselman (U.S.), Dick Feurman (U.S.), Barry Ross (Canada), Sol Freeman (Canada),
Louis Lourie (Canada), Luke Elias Paschkoff (U.S.).
Center Row, Sheldon Schnite (U.S.), Harry Eisner (U.S.), Ivan Conn (England). Paul Katz (U.S.), Al Feinberg (U.S.), Ralph Lowenstein (U.S.), Neil Goodman (U.S.).

... Among them
were U.S. Navy veterans of World War II
who had just been discharged. Some had
served in the Merchant Marine, a few had
pre-war service, but a large number of them
had no professional maritime experience.
The search for volunteers and the recruitment
of crews was conducted mainly by word of
mouth and by checking the employment
bureaus where former naval and merchantmarine
officers sought work. This search
was carried out as covertly as possible, for
fear that Britain would intervene, as she
indeed did, and try to influence the U.S.
government to put a halt to the recruitment
and the sale of ships.

The volunteers, primarily the Americans
and Canadians, helped to prepare and outfit
the ships that became the “shadow navy” of the Mossad l’Aliyah Bet. Had
the Mandatory Government arrested them, they would have faced trial for violating the Emergency Regulations forbidding illegal immigration, regulations carrying sentences of up to eight years’ imprisonment and/or a fine of 10,000 Pounds Sterling.

“American and Canadian and British lives from the Beginning.”

From your own post, they were “volunteers”.

Individuals, not governments, that chose to stand with Israel. Does that invalidate my statement? I don’t think so. We’ll have to agree to disagree.

"Military force is an option of last resort," Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy said during a press briefing in Singapore. "It's off the table in the near term."

You all need to remember who exactly "Michèle Flournoy" is.

If her job was based on merit, and not politics, this woman would not have come within 1,000 of the Pentagon. When she lost her "journalist" paycheck, she was given a top Pentagon post because of her connections to Hillary Rodham-Clinton and several Obama admin employees. She called her top defense post: "My personal government bailout.”

She is a long time Democrat leftist/Marxist, and an Obama political hack. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mich%C3%A8le_Flournoy

Many of us saw this disaster coming when she was "appointed" to the DoD.

From last April:

Another left-wing journalist bailed out by Obama

____________________________________________________________________________

By Michelle Malkin • April 21, 2009 09:16 AM I can’t even keep count anymore, can you? Meet the newest left-wing journalist rescued from the ailing newspaper industry by the Obama administration: former LA Times columnist Rosa Brooks. She’s the daughter of liberal writer Barbara Ehrenreich and an acolyte of George Soros. And she’s working in the…Pentagon. Not a joke. Nile Gardiner gives you the rundown: In what has to be one of the most extreme appointments yet by the Obama Administration, ex-Los Angeles Times columnist and Georgetown law professor Rosa Brooks has just been made an adviser to Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michelle Fluornoy – a move Brooks describes as “my personal government bailout.” Bailout is certainly the right word for someone who appears to have no relevant national security qualifications for the position. She does though have experience working as Special Counsel for George Soros’s Open Society Institute in New York, and as a former adviser to Harold Koh, the hugely controversial nominee for Legal Adviser to the State Department. Brooks’ new boss Fluornoy holds one of the most powerful posts in the Pentagon, and is already playing a key role in shaping the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan as well as the wider war against al-Qaeda. She will also be a central figure in shaping U.S.-UK defence cooperation and Washington’s policy towards NATO. As an adviser to Fluornoy, Brooks will wield an extraordinary degree of influence in helping shape U.S. policy. Her extreme views should therefore be closely scrutinized. Brooks’ description of the previous occupant of the White House as “our torturer in chief” is hard to square with President Obama’s call for bipartisanship. Nor is her ludicrous comparison of the Bush Administration’s legal arguments on the war on terror with Adolf Hitler’s use of political propaganda. She has also accused civilian White House and Pentagon officials from the last administration of being “eager to embrace the values normally exemplified by military juntas,” while urging “military personnel to speak out, regardless of the cost, when they think our civilian leaders have gone beyond the pale” – little more than an open-ended call for the politicization of the armed forces. Rowan Scarborough at Human Events has more: Some in the Pentagon, normally a conservative and patriotic enclave, are reacting with alarm at Brooks’ appointment. One Gates staffer told Human Events that Brooks is an “extremist.” The source emphasized she was Flournoy’s appointment, not Gates’. “Gates did not hire her,” the official said. “Any time you have people with extreme views on the right or left it makes people nervous here,” said a senior official. In response to a query from Human Events, the Defense Department provided Brooks’ job description. She is a “principal adviser” to Flournoy to “develop cross regional planning.” In other words, Brooks will help shape the Pentagon’s relations with foreign governments and militaries. Later, the department amended her job description. “Ms. Brooks was hired as a Special Advisor to the USDP to address a range of issues of interest to the Undersecretary, including speechwriting and special projects,” the statement said.

_______________________________________________________________________

What we basically have is an Obama nut case running amok in the Pentagon. Now, that is not to say that she does not speak for the nut cases that she is beholden to. It basically means that we have a wack job in a dangerous position of power who has no right to be there.

Now, she is out there giving the green light to Iran (in radical public statements).

Gates should fire her, but he cannot/will not because of her political connections.

Thanks for the relevant information. I’d only disagree that this is her government bailout, that comes when she leaves defence, and takes a private sector jog. Contractors won’t provide what FNMA and FHLMC provided democrats when it comes to riches, but she’ll do just fine.

I can tell you it was not individuals but the United States Government at the direction of the President who decided the situation in 67 was so dire that we provided Israel with Tank ammunition we had not made available to anyone else in the world.. The best we had was flown to Israel along with other munitions..

America as a Nation has stood with Israel more than one time in spite of events like the Liberty. American Patriot Missle Crews were parked in Israel not that long ago..

“Precise details of what transpired in Washington during the first week of the Yom Kippur War, launched by Egypt and Syria on October 6, 1973, are hard to come by, in no small measure owing to conflicting accounts given by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger regarding their respective roles.

What is clear, from the preponderance of information provided by those directly involved in the unfolding events, is that President Richard Nixon — overriding inter-administration objections and bureaucratic inertia — implemented a breathtaking transfer of arms, code-named Operation Nickel Grass, that over a four-week period involved hundreds of jumbo U.S. military aircraft delivering more than 22,000 tons of armaments. ?

I suspect we want the same thing to restore our Republic and by lawful political and social means stop liberal sacks of crap from distroying the nation..

I also suspect we both want and support Israel beating the crap out of the Islamofacists who blow themselves up murdering Teenagers in a Pizza Parlor or prance around in glee as they gun down three little blond haired Girls and their Mother on their way down the road from one Kibbutz to another.

“as for Meir herself, to the end of her life she referred to Nixon as “my president” and told a group of Jewish leaders in Washington shortly after the war: “For generations to come, all will be told of the miracle of the immense planes from the United States bringing in the materiel that meant life to our people.”
