Indeed there may be a well documented history of harmful levels of salt in processed foods.

And so the intention to reduce salt levels in processed foods may be well-intentioned.

But ... this is an issue of health awareness and promotion versus regulation. It may be a role of government to promote the general welfare through education but to force compliance is a different matter.

I have nothing against the government mandating packaging requirements to call out the amount of salt versus what is recommended. I would also support a public awareness campaign to reveal the documented harmful effects of too much salt or effects of different types of salts.
