Israel Weighs Merits of Solo Attack on Iran

Officials, Seeing Impending Policy Split With U.S., Debate Prospect of a Military Strike Without Washington's Consent

JERUSALEM—The Israeli security establishment is divided over whether it needs Washington's blessing if Israel decides to attack Iran, Israeli officials say, as the U.S. campaign for sanctions drags on and Tehran steadily develops greater nuclear capability.

Some senior Israeli officials say in interviews that they see signs Washington may be willing to live with a nuclear-armed Iran, an eventuality that Israel says it won't accept. Compounding Israeli concerns were U.S. statements this past weekend that underscored U.S. resistance to a military option. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Sunday discussed a memo to National Security Adviser James Jones warning that the U.S. needed new strategies, including how to contain a nuclear Iran—suggesting that Iran could reach nuclear capability without any foreign military force trying to stop it.

Israel says it supports the U.S.-led push for new economic sanctions against Iran. But Israeli officials have increasingly voiced frustration over the slow pace of diplomatic efforts to get sanctions in place.

Relations between the two allies have soured in recent weeks, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government pushing back against Obama administration pressure to freeze building in Jewish areas of East Jerusalem, which Washington says is counterproductive to its Mideast peace efforts.

A senior U.S. official said the U.S. has stated to Israel its opposition to unilateral Israeli action, but that there were still fears within the administration that Israel could strike Iran despite Washington's objections.

Why couldn’t they do it when Bush was president, and had the full backing of the US military, I still am clueless as to why they would wait.

WEll, Iran/Syria/Hezbolla are gearing up for THEIR next attack on Israel, and, if Israel goes with US help or not, the US goes next if it does not submit more than the current administration has submitted to present, and the US does NOT obliterate Iran/Syria as an immediate response.

If that axis were to attack the US and Israel at the same time, are we reassured that the US would obliterate them quickly and efficiently in immediate turn, or, say, “OW, THAT hurt!” and wait until committee studies confirmed beyond the shadow of a doubt that the weaponry used on the US came from Iran/Syria?

If it should be ascertained, after appropriate, boiler-plate confirmed internet research, that the weaponry used not only was used by Iran/Syria but was supplied by China, Pakistan, or NKorea, what then?...a second committee would be assumed to be placed on fast-track consideration of that issue.

If committees are the result of grievous injury, we are doomed.

Maybe they were hoping my sons would do it for them.

The latest generation of Jews is unlike any in our history.

They STILL support Obama 55%.

Simple.

(1) an attack solves nothing, while creating a whole new mess of problems (like a full-scale war), and

(2) the US military was kinda busy with that whole Iraq military campaign - which, if you’ll recall, was urged mainly by Israel.

What sort of force projection capabilities do any Arab states hostile to the US posses that would pose any credible threat to the US mainland?

Jews are almost always on the forefront of social movements, it seems to me. I guess it's hard to stop the train when you're out front.

We do not really know, regarding our mainland or in the ME. If they do not have the capability now or in the future, we do not have a problem.

Russia has available a 4 unit missile, the Club-k and N-Systems system ready for purchase from a private company for any buyers they qualify. Here is a chilling informative video:

An attack against nutjobs thinking that their destiny is to destroy America , Israel and bring about the return of their false prophet solves plenty. IMHO.

“If committees are the result of grievous injury, we are doomed.”

.. ....And that, givemELL, is why you never see statues in the park of committees.

Yeah, a vision of a forest of statues of committees would be troubling.

an attack solves nothing

"Nothing" except destroying the nuke program of a nation run by madmen who'll likely have missiles capable of reaching North America by 2013.

Except an attack wouldn’t destroy it, only delay it. Meanwhile the economy is wrecked by sky-high oil prices.
So, let’s review: the original problem isn’t solved, and brand new, huge problems are created. Any way you look at it, that’s simply a lousy trade-off - something the Pentagon already recognizes.

And as for missiles reaching America from Iran, well, no - because there will be the interceptor sites in eastern Europe by then. No missile from Iran will get past those.

(BTW, if missiles are such a threat, why isn’t any action taken against their source - North Korea, the real menace?)

Iran can be contained.

Iran can be contained.

Perhaps their (forthcoming) ICBMs can be contained by an ABM system with a 100% kill rate. ...but such a system has yet to be devised.

Plus there are other ways of delivery a nuke. Remember, Iran is by far the biggest terrorism-exporting nation in the world. Nuclear arms smuggling into either Israel or a sea port here in the U.S. is a huge concern.

And you're ignoring another major problem: once Iran goes nuclear every last sunni (Arab) Muslim nation will be initiating nuke programs of their own to offset the threat from their shia enemies. No way they'll stand for being in such a vulnerable position. The end result is a nuke arms race in the Muslim Middle East -- about as dangerous a scenario as can be imagined.

"Pakistan can be contained" is now "Iran can be contained" which will turn into "nuclear Syria, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia can be contained."

Bigtime denial. Nuke proliferation in the Islamic world can't be tolerated. ...unless we have a death wish. "Mutually Assured Destruction" (MAD) may have worked with the Russians, but it won't work with religious cultists.
