Democratic leaders in Congress have agreed to try to pass immigration legislation this year, placing the explosive issue ahead of an energy bill on their agenda and upending conventional wisdom that it was dead for now.
Democrats hope the measure will quell frustration among Hispanic voters at inaction on immigration in advance of the fall elections, where those voters could be crucial in many races. A comprehensive bill would include a path to citizenship for those in the U.S. illegally, a priority for immigrant advocates but something opponents deride as amnesty.
"It's a moral imperative and a political imperative," said a Democratic leadership aide.
For Republicans, the issue presents both opportunities and perils. Some Republican strategists argue that an immigration battle will divide Democrats, which could help the GOP. The issue could be damaging to some conservative House Democrats who face tough races this fall in swing districts.
"If Democrats want to add to an already unpopular agenda by bringing up an issue that highlights divisions in their own caucus, they will be making a bad political environment even worse," said Paul Lindsey, a spokesman for the National Republican Campaign Committee, which works to elect Republicans to the House.
In a leadership meeting late Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he would bring immigration legislation to the floor this year, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said she would try to move the bill if it passed the Senate first, according to three Democratic officials. With limited time available for action this year, both leaders said they would put immigration ahead of energy on their priority list, the officials said.

The Democrats want as many illegal aliens in the States as possible. Then they want to register them.
I am increasingly of the opinion that Barack Obama is not planning on having a second term, or at least not on being elected to one (wink, wink). How else can we explain him continually advancing such horribly unpopular ideas?
With 20 million new Democrats he can be president for life.
Do you realize if this AMNESTY happens we are in effect creating the equivilent of adding over 17 more states to this country? And thats not even considering the chain migration that is in every amnesty bill or the millions of illegal alien anchor babies intent on carrying out the terror of their Mexican drug cartels.
Please look at what giving amnesty to as many as 20,000,000 illegal alien foreign nationals actually represents. More than the population of 16 states and DC!
According to the 2000 census, 18,785,867 is the total populations combined of Wyoming, Dist. of Columbia, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho, Nebraska, West Virginia, New Mexico and Nevada.
THINK about that! http://towncriernews.blogspot.com/search?q=what+does+amnesty+look+like
20 Million is just the beginning. When all of their dependents are factored in, it be more like 100 to 150 MILLION.
Wouldn't that make a great winning slogan during a recession?
They’re coming at us from every angle.
Good luck Harry...we'll see how that reelection in Nevada is going for you.
I don't believe they can muster more than 50 votes in the Senate.
I hope your right. I'm even confident that McCain won't vote for amnesty. Before August 24, that is -- it being the date for his primary election.
But Brother Lindsay is under no such restriction...
The Left and RINOs realize they must vastly increase the number of Left voters before 2012 or the dream of a permanent one party State will be put on temporary hold. They are so close they can taste it and do not want to put it off any more.
Amnesty now will not save the left in this year’s elections unless citizenship for illegals is simple “proclaimed” and they can all be given voting cards immediately, but it will bring the Socialists back into power in 2012 and lock them in for many years, at least until the split in the Democrat Party when the “Hispanics” form their Mexican National Party and proclaim Aztlan.
The perception of the imminence of Amnesty increases the northward pressure in the Mexican and Central American populatiosn. Its implementation will create a surge to the border that will be highly visible and will overrun and dismantle the crossing points. The only bright spot is all the empty land down south that Americans can move to for wide open spaces.
This “horribly unpopular idea” is a no-brainer. Getting 10-40 million new registered Democrats in place before the 2012 election guarantees the Kenyan’s re-election and a permanent One-Party State thenceforward.
Reid had the gall to speak at an amnesty rally unbelievably held on the very same day as the services for Rob Krentz. Told me he was more interested in illegals than citizens.
Ping!
