When Japans prime minister visited Washington this month, Japanese officials lobbied intensely to get him a one-on-one with Barack Obama. In the end, Yukio Hatoyama had to settle for just 10 minutes, and even that during a banquet when the US president was presumably more interested in the appetisers and wine. These things matter in Japan. One senior politician called the put-down as it was inevitably viewed in Tokyo humiliating. He even noted that the Japanese prime minister was shunted to the edge of a group photo, the diplomatic equivalent of banishment to Siberia.
It would be wrong to read too much into these titbits of protocol (though it is always fun trying). But behind the snub lies something real. The US-Japan alliance, the cornerstone of security in east Asia since 1945, has not looked so rocky in years.

Buy some airtime in the US to 'splain how Zer0 screws the friends of America.
Dear Japan, our president is an ass. Now you know it too.
Didn’t read the article yet but there is an underlying problem of a left wing Japanese government. Odd that Obama snubs them he considers America guilty for dropping the A bombs on them.
In any event, Obama is a disaster on the international scene.
From the point of view of Liberation orthodoxy, within Asia Japan is very much the “establishment”, and as such is worthy of leftist scorn; Japan is a “tool of the USA”.
For this reason the US-Japan relationship is treated with ambivalence, and precisely the point in time where we see a PRC slowly but surely flexing its political muscle, particularly in the effort to develop a blue-water navy.
If you were Japan weighing a decision whether to permit the USMC to remain on Okinawa, is it reasonable to suspect that with THIS President the Marines there might actually be USED in a defensive action....?
No, the President is unreliable in defending US interests, to say nothing of defending Japanese interests.
And so I think it is POSSIBLE that they will expel the US Marines —THAT IS A REALLY BIG DEAL. They will make the judgment that it is better for Japanese to rely on other Japanese, and not those other foreigners with the admittedly cool President who does not take commitments seriously.
This isn’t good.

Maybe my perspective is different, but when 0bama insults these leaders of our former allies, I don’t see it as him humiliating them. I see it as him making an aXX out of himeself. My only hope is that the allies see it the same way, and won’t write USA off completely before the next CIC takes office.
Rick Hamada is one of our local radio talk show hosts. His column this week addresses the same issue - the disrespect shown our friends and the "honor" shown our enemies.
Now that would be a great idea (buy airtime) assuming a media outlet other than Fox would sell it. I’m not so sure anyone else would.
It's not like Barack Obama can accept foreign contributions anymore. He has an election campaign fundraiser to go to somewhere.
Tee time on the links, dawg.
Your handle would indicate you have a pretty good understanding of the Japanese. In any event I wouldn’t blame them for publically humiliating 0. In fact, I wish they would.
Apologies to Japan. We know how you feel. He doesn’t like us either.
A few years ago, I would’ve thought that moving the Marines from Okinawa to Guam would’ve been a logical move. But NOW... We learn from that MENSA member congressman from GA that Guam could tip over. Hmmmm... Where to now?
How much of our debt are the Japanese currently holding?
Ping.
You're probably right.A busy guy like Hussein obviously has to set priorities.
The article is definitely right about one thing: These kinds of things MATTER in Japan.
They will not forget it soon.
Barack Obama will damage this nation in every way that he can. Ruining relations with allies is just one more tactic to bring this country down.
He is making another speech today. Was there ever a day since he swindled his way into the Oval Office when he WASN”T making a speech? Please help me Father. I know that I am not supposed to hate.
