Nearly 4M to pay health insurance penalty by 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nearly 4 million Americans—the vast majority of them middle class—will have to pay the new penalty for not getting health insurance when President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law kicks in, according to congressional estimates released Thursday. The penalties will average a little more than $1,000 apiece in 2016, the Congressional Budget Office said in a report.

Most of the people paying the fine will be middle class. Obama pledged in 2008 not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000 a year and couples making less than $250,000.

Republicans have criticized the penalties, even though the idea for a mandate was originally proposed by the GOP in the 1990s and is part of the Massachusetts health care plan signed into law in 2006 by then Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican. Attorneys general in more than a dozen states are working to challenge the mandate in federal court as unconstitutional.

"The individual mandate tax will fall hardest on Americans who can least afford to pay it, many of whom were promised subsidies by the Democrats and who the president has promised would not pay higher taxes," said Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, the top Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

Doesn’t matter. The bill will be repealed long before then.

Are these the people who don’t buy insurance and when they get hurt they run to the emergency room for the taxpayers to pay for it. I just don’t get why we put up with that. What is wrong with collecting some funds from people who risk not getting insurance. In a conservative world, we should not be expected to pay for people’s hospital bills. What the hell am I missing here??? I feel like I am in the twilight zone or Free Republic is not the conservative site it once was.

Drop your coverage, pay the fine, and if you get seriously ill then sign up for insurance. Spending money on a ponzi scheme is foolish.

Needed to add one other thing. When you get well drop the coverage, no need spending money on something other people are forced to pay for. Its a ponzi scheme.

IMO, Romney set a precedent by signing the Mass health bill.

I will never forgive him for doing it, and it isn’t working, either. Costs are WAAAAY above even the hardest estimates.

a $1K fine is still far less than your annual premium is going to be for any kind of comprehensive health care policy. Sarah Palin among others is right, people will gladly pay the fine and then just abuse the “no preexisting conditions” clause when they get sick.

Let me see if I understand this. An Obot works a part time minimum wage job, has 5 or more kids, recieved the earned income gift from the gov, paid no taxes and will have the $1000 penalty deducted from her $5000 tax gift(earned income credit)She then thinks that she bought health insurance for $1000 and goes to the ER for basic health care. Is that right?

Hey, If you’re looking for clarity and understanding of this $2T boondoggle, this dog won’t hunt.

New revelations of economic booby-traps in this monstrosity are being uncovered every day. God only knows what this behemoth of bad legislation will do to hard-working Americans in the end.

All I know is that each day that passes with ØMG in the Whitehouse nudges me closer to the poverty line instead of the other direction. I also know that I’m not alone.

This is going to get blamed on the Republicans in the end.

I bet most of these people forced to pay are Democrats and when this gets implemented very likely a Republican will be in office guess what that means?
I don't need to tell you.
