The allure was a compact six-shot, double-action revolver offering terminal ballistics similar to a .357 Mag.

When I was a kid, I had a Ruger single six that I shot so much it completely rattled apart. 22 was good training.

Ruger builds them tough.

But I dont’ know about market savvy ...

If you just get a .357, do you really need more power, or are you just sensing a need to show off?

Why can’t they use a very slim cartridge that’s longer, and
put 8 cartridges in the revolver? Wouldn’t the longer casing allow the thinner bullet to go faster as long as there was similar amount of explosives behind it?

You've asked a good question.

The next variables are barrel length and the overall size (and portability) of the gun. In order to optimize the ballistics of a cartridge you describe that looks something like, say, a .30 Carbine or (lemme think for a minute)... yeah, sure, why not, a 7.62x39, you start needing more barrel length.

This is impractical in a revolver. Notice that you find some of the fancy single-shot handguns in almost all rifle calibers, but revolvers are found (typically) in rimmed handgun cartridges that do what you'd expect a handgun to do, in a weapon the size of a handgun.

It weighs 48 oz., holds eight rounds.

Not for concealed carry.

Ruger made a revolver chambered for the .30 cal carbine round. My son has one. From a rest he can empty it into the bulls eye at 100 yards, but then he did serve in Marine Presidential Security Forces under Bush #2. When he pulls the trigger there is a fire storm the size of a football out the muzzle, which definitely indicates it is a rifle round.

The Blackhawk is an 8 shot and the GP100 is a 7 shot.

I wish the new Chiappa Rhino was in a different caliber than .357 Magnum. I wonder what the recoil would like in something like .327 Magnum.

I had to look it up.

Rhino Revolver

The new Chiappa Rhino has revolutionized the revolver with
a patented design that tames the prehistoric characteristic
that most revolvers possess.
For starters, the appearance is like no other revolver you
have ever seen.
Typically a revolver fires from the top most chamber which
is aligned with the barrel.
The new Chiappa Rhino barrel is aligned with the bottom
most chamber which is the key component to Rhino’s tame
characteristics.
Due to the lower position of the barrel, the Rhino’s
appearance is abstract from any other revolver design.

They have to put the barrel somewhere so they might as well put it where it belongs.

No muzzle flip and they could have made in a Auto caliber with moonclips.

You gain one extra round, big deal. I can’t see giving up the utility of the 38SPL/357 for a 32SWL/327 in a heavy non concealable wheel gun. Now a six shot 327 Fed. in a Ruger LCR would be worth looking at for a concealment gun.
