USAA CEO ROBLES: Please Contact Your U.S. Senator Today

Rarely in our 87-year history have we turned to USAA members to weigh in with elected representatives on an issue of great importance. But, we are now.

The U.S. Senate currently is considering legislation (S.3217) that would impose new rules on the nation's financial services industry, including USAA.

As the leading provider of financial services to America's military community, USAA supports financial services reform.

However, the current Senate bill would disproportionally impact USAA because we are a unique and fully integrated association. USAA is not like the banks and other companies that helped bring down our economy, and we never took a penny of TARP funds. We do not engage in the harmful practices this legislation seeks to resolve.

If unchanged, the bill would:

Prevent USAA from managing the association's portfolio as we have for the past 87 years.

Jeopardize our ability to continue offering many of our competitive products.

Limit our ability to return money to our members. Last year, USAA returned $1.2 billion to our members in the form of distributions, dividends, and bank rebates and rewards.*

So, we are asking all USAA members and employees to urge their U.S. senators to amend a portion of the bill, known as the "Volcker Rule," to eliminate its effect on a company like USAA. Please know that this legislation does not impact individual member's investments.

Regardless of the outcome of the legislation, USAA will remain a unique and enduring association that's all about you — the military and their families.

Please take action on this matter by immediately contacting your U.S. senator. You may click here to access a special website that will enable you to quickly send an e-mail message to your senator.

USAA is just an awesome company. Great to deal with. They don’t need a bunch of government bureaucrats going in there and messing it up.

Absolutely. My parents have been members since the early 60s, 47 years to be precise.

I’ve been insured with them since I was able to drive, 24 years now. Have checking, savings, auto, homeowners, IRA with them.

I got into an accident once and the guy I exchange info (he rammed me at a 4 way stop) asked ‘Who is USAA, I’ve never heard of them’. I laughed in his face. Stupid Bay Area liberal.

Chris Dodd, lackey/whore for the Connecticut insurance industry, sticking it to a well-run competitor.

We'll see if Dodd has the honor to fix this “oversight”.

Been a USAA member for several years, recently had a claim after an auto accident in a rental car in GUAM. Service was EXCELLENT, they were able to obtain documentation that I needed but could not get on my own and then posted them in PDF format online in my account under “my doccuments” — service EXCEEDED my expectation... having said that if USAA says to do this...... then JUST DO IT !! passing it on..

Just switched credit card to USAA and, more recently, Homeowners and Auto. My daughter has been with them for a few years and has had some of the best service she’s ever experienced. My few calls to them have ALL been with US citizens living and working HERE who actually cared about getting it done.

I received this email as well and fired off letter last night. Today I received a form-letter reply that did not mention anything about the Vockler Rule.

Here is my response:
Dear Senator Bennet,
Please replace the legislative assistant who wrote this form letter. He or she did not bother to read the body of my email which dealt specifically with the Vockler rule and its draconian effects on member owned financial entities like USAA. As a former Senate staffer, to a Senator on the Banking Committee no less, I know how to read legislation and pick apart the faults within. I also know how to cogently reply to constituents who have obviously done their homework and deserve more than a simple form letter filled with empty platitudes. Because of this background, I know when I have been passed off with a form letter generated by a computerized program that lumps constituent mail together by broad categories.
I want to know why you specifically support the Vockler Rule. If you do not support the section of the legislation, I wish to know what you are planning on doing to fight the passage of the “reform” bill with this provision included.
I will be watching, as will be every USAA member in Colorado. As the primary insurer and banker of US military members and their families, you should know that USAA has a very large constituency in Colorado. We are educated, dedicated patriots who never fail in our civic duty- including the duty to vote out those Senators and Representatives who no longer serve our interests.

Done, and done—by both my husband and I.

Interestingly, using the link in the email, the Democrat senator (FL-Nelson) required our phone number, while the Republican (FL-LeMieux —placeholder—) did not.

Strange huh?

Agreed. I have both cars and my house insured with them, bank with them and have a majority of my retirement savings invested with them. I laugh at the GEICO, Progressive and Allstate commercials promising to save me money on my car insurance. They never seem to compare their rates to USAA.

When I call them they always address me by my former rank and are very helpful. Their website is super friendly, too.

Goodness, it's a good thing your accident didn't cause that island to tip over! ;-)

I've been a member of USAA since my teens when I got my first auto insurance. They now cover most of my insurance needs and then some.

Just so this thread doesn't tip over from positive input:

I dropped USAA in the late seventies or early eighties because, with renters insurance, auto insurance, and household goods, I got monthly bills of wildly varying amounts. (Official reaction - "that's what the computer says").
At my pathetic salary in those days I couldn't budget for the swings.

I'm good with Auto Club today.

That said, I'm going to support this request because USAA has done good in a niche that needs to be maintained.
