If Obama is this country’s reparation for slavery, we have overpaid.

Glad to see this issue getting press although it cries for wider, frequent attention.

The lame arguments I’ve heard from Democrat is that the Africans sold their brothers and sisters into slavery because:

The Europeans dangled beads or what not in their faces and they simply couldn’t resist.

Or the Africans sold their own because they had no other way to acquire goods and services.

Or the Africans sold their brethren because the Europeans threatened to kill everyone.

Oh no, the African slave traders could not possibly have been greedy, hateful bas*****! They had to learn how to be that way from the white Europeans (hope I don’t have to add the sarc/ tag here).

According to these excuses Africans were apparently the most stupid, immoral, unethical, childish, barbaric race in the world which is just how Democrats view black Americans.

When you can find me a slave to “reparate” I’ll gladly cut them a check. Until then, get off your damned soap box you evil bunch of extortionist race baiters!

Hey folks...give Gates some credit here. Yeah...I could not stand the arrogant SOB who gave the Cambridge cops a hard time that night and was just itching for an incident, but he has come clean here and made the argument that black Africans share a significant part of the culpability for the 17th, 18th and even 19th centuries slave trade. Read the whole piece...he even demolishes arguments made by some in the modern black community that would mitigate this guilt.

And, yes there were arabs involved, but there were also Jews involved (mainly based in the Caribbean), as well as Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, amongst others.

If Black Studies Departments have uncovered these truths and Gates publicizes them, then perhaps they have, after all, served a good purpose.

Anyone - and that means ANYONE - with so much as two gray cells to rub together considers the very idea of reparations a particularly sad, pathetic, and rather sick joke.

Obama has some interesting family history regarding slavery-- he has not one ounce of slave blood in him-- to the contrary, his ancestors were slave owners.

From the Chicago Tribune (March 2007):

Many people know that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's father was from Kenya and his mother from Kansas. But an intriguing sliver of his family history has received almost no attention until now: It appears that forebears of his white mother owned slaves, according to genealogical research and census records.

Reparations are only a Pseudonym for a big welfare check.

I would be very cautious about giving Gates any credit. His racist views of America are well-known, and there is likely some other motive than just telling the “truth” at play here.

There is still slavery in this world. That is the elephant in the room. With the trillions spent over the years in the US on minority status/changes/neighborhoods/programs, it’s time to turn our attention to the CONTINUING problem of slavery, not something from 150 years ago. IIRC, there are instances of slaves in the US, largely from S Asia

Plus Mexico, and eastern Europe, facilitated by our wide open borders that allow human traffickers easy access to the US.

About a year ago, female slaves serving as prostitutes were rescued in the town where I live in central NJ - they were from eastern Europe.

When Barry Soetoro hauls his behind all over the planet apologizing for his Kenyan (Luo-arabic/muslim) ancestors selling off the Christian Kikuyu of Kenya on the slave markets on the road to Mombassa, then that will be an honest day.

As for me and mine, we didn’t believe in slavery, never owned, worked, or SOLD a slave in the history of our family.

In fact my ancestors were slaves of the Welsh peerage in Britain...where’s my blasted reparations from the oh great ones across the sea? They never asked for reparations, they were just blessed to get out of the place.

Although I share your view, just reading what is in this column must be seen as somewhat heartening after the decades of lies and victimology.

It’s the “quiet” racists that are the most damaging.

In addition I have seen articles in which is it stated that Obama's African ancestors include Arab slave traders. Both Barack and Obama are African Arab names.

My white GGGGG-Grandfather was a member of an Federal Eastern Tennessee Calvary Unit. He and his brother and a brother-in-law were all executed by their neighbors for not fighting for the South. These guys have never been given any recognition or thanks by anyone. Slave reparations, how about reparations for all the white families whose men died in the Civil War. I guarantee the blacks of this country only know and have been taught only their slave history and nothing about the sacrifices of other groups on their behalf.

Your story illustrates my point exactly. I’m sorry for the losses your family has suffered. It’s a national tragedy that this type of sacrifice gets absolutely no attention whatsoever.
