N. Korea's Kim likely to visit China from late April to early May

BEIJING/JERUSALEM, April 24 KYODO

North Korea and China are making final arrangements for a visit by North Korean leader Kim Jong Il to China from late April to early May, diplomatic sources said Saturday.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas plans to hold talks with Kim in China when Abbas visits the country on Friday and Saturday next week, the sources said.

Abbas plans to attend the opening ceremony of the World Expo in Shanghai on Friday. If Abbas were to be able to meet Kim in Beijing, Kim's visit to China would have to be around this time.

A source familiar with North Korean affairs said Kim's third son and possible heir Kim Jong Un may accompany the leader to China. If Kim visits China, he is expected to try to win economic aid and investment from Beijing and China is believed to want the visit to help jumpstart the stalled six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear programs.

A late April trip would be Kim's first visit to China since January 2006 and his first trip outside North Korea since health problems came to light in 2008. If Kim Jong Un accompanies his father to China, he may seek to build ties with next-generation Chinese leaders.

A delegation of the Workers' Party of Korea arrived in Beijing on Thursday, received by the Chinese Communist Party's International Department.

Visits to the two countries by their leaders are organized by the Communist Party's International Department and the WPK's International Department.

PLO and N. Korea are traditionally close diplomatically. Arafat used to visit N. Korea, too.

Is this one of those traditional courtesy calls or something more?

I didn’t realize Kim was an Abba fan, but it figures,
he’s a dancing queen.
