McVey is charged with going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor.

What the heck kind of charge is that?

It's an archaic 19th Century law that almost no one has ever heard of. In fact, today was the first mention of it I've heard in over a decade. It is used by NC law enforcement as a sort of catch-all "gotcha" in gun-related incidents where they don't like what you're doing but can't charge you with anything else.

Its use in this incident is pretty much pure harassment.

I appreciate your serious answer on that even though I was being a bit facetious. I expected that it was sort of a legalese shorthand for "terrorizing the public" rather than the way it sounded. I was also pretty suspicious that it was a "gotcha" charge as you confirm.

I guess if there's more to the story we will hear about it soon enough but odds are this guy had no idea the President was in town.
