Arizona Immigration Bill Angers Al Sharpton, Mayor Bloomberg
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 25, 2010 | Staff

Some New Yorkers see their city as the center of the universe. But over the weekend, all eyes were focused on Arizona after the state’s governor signed the country’s most stringent immigration bill into law.

On Saturday, New York area politicians and immigrants groups denounced the measure, which allows police to question people on the suspicion that they may be here illegally. As the Daily News reported, Mayor Bloomberg said the new measure could hurt foreign investment. Sen. Chuck Schumer called it “mean-spirited” and Bill DeBlasio, the public advocate, said it was “Un-American.”

On Sunday, the Rev. Al Sharpton said he would join a coalition of activists and travel to Arizona to protest the measure.

“The Arizona immigration bill is an affront to the civil rights of all Americans and an attempt to legalize racial profiling,” he said in a statement.

Joining Sharpton was a host of New York Latino leaders, including representatives from the Puerto Rican Bar Association, which is offering legal assistance to fight the measure in court.

Defenders of the Arizona bill said it will push the federal government to implement better border protection measures, and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has said racial profiling will not be part of the policy.

On May 1, immigrant rights activists will hold a series of rallies across the country to protest the Arizona law. In New York, the rally will take place in Foley Square in downtown Manhattan.

This article is featured on the Wall Street Journal's new 'Metropolis' page created to go head-to-head to providing New York news coverage in direct cofrotation with the New York Slimes and so all of us fellow Freepers ought to wish them the very best of success hoping they rip out a huge chunk of the Slimes readership numbers.

It's a great day for America when immigration legislation is so vociferously objected to by the likes of Al shrpton, Mayor Bloomberg.

I’d call that proof that it’s a good law.

Wonder how long this bunch of spoiled brats will be able to withstand the heat of the desert. Bet they won't like those AZ summer temps.
These elite make me sick. They do not have these groups running over the boarders like folks in CA or AZ do. I lived in AZ for years, love the state and were it not for my native CA hubby would still be there. But something has to be done about the illegal and corrupt element crossing the boarders..
Bloomberg likes to brag about how good NYC is with the crime rate lowered ( thanks to Rudy) but we in the west must put up with the outlaws..

Will someone please explain what business it is of Al Sharpton to get involved with Arizona politics. Would he be there if 7 or 8 illegals beat up and killed a white guy?

So, let me get this straight. ONCE someone who broke the U.S. Immigration Laws and did NOT Get a visa and come into the country, he can’t be stopped by any law enforcement to check to see if he is here legally? So, if I am a terrorist, and engage in criminal activity, all I have to do is GET PAST the border, and then I’m in FREE? Sounds like a real deal for another breaking the law! IF YOU HAVE THE PAPER. why can’t you show it? Who do you think you are, the President of the USA? When I go as a foreigner to other countries, I ALWAYS have my papers ready, I figure they have a right to know who the foreigners are that don’t speak the language, and how long they’ve been there and what are they doing. Is America Sovereign, can they make their rules, or is the riff raff of the world think it’s their country too?

It “could hurt foreign investment?” Bloomberg apparently means the Mexican drug gangs operating in the US.

We could care less what these bozos think or believe - they do NOT LIVE in Arizona. Comeon down and we'll give you a tour of our once beautiful dessert and also our urban areas filled with illegal aliens loitering on our streets. How can a national law that has been deemed constitutional all of a sudden be unconstitutional when a state copies the law and puts it on their books? Makes no sense to me.

When a Federally chartered bank is in the midst of being robbed (a federal crime) do the local police stand by while their superiors get on the phone with the FBI and Treasury? I think not.

Skyrocketing crime in Bloomer’s NYC and he’s worried about Arizona.

Let's lobby Juan McCain to provide homes for these two .. somewhere near the border ... hot ... dry ... dusty ... and infiltrated with illegals.

Nothing cures a car-chasing dog like being hit.

When Arizona catches them, take the directly to the Greyhound station and put them on the bus for New York.

On Sunday, the Rev. Al Sharpton said he would join a coalition of activists and travel to Arizona to protest the measure.

He said more than that - he was coming to AZ to incite CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!!!

Stay away from AZ - you have no business to conduct here other than to incite a riot.

Sharpton if you insist on this course of action - BRING IT ON, WE'LL BE WAITING.

Yes, where were Sharpton and his twin, Jessie when that rancher was killed by an illegal? No screaming about the rancher’s civil rights, eh?
