obvious response would be to start sinking every nork sub and blame it on a mechanical failure

U.S. official: N. Korea torpedo likely sunk S. Korean warship

That should read “torpedo likely SANK S. Korean warship.”

It’s sink, sank, sunk. The past tense is sank. Past participle is sunk, as in “the boat has sunk.”
