WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says Arizona's new immigration law could siphon federal money and staff needed to go after dangerous immigrants. Napolitano says Immigration and Customs Enforcement fears it will have to use its stretched resources to deal with those arrested under Arizona's new law. She testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. The law allows police to question people about their immigration status if they have reason to suspect they are in the country illegally. President Barack Obama has called the new law "misguided," and critics say it will lead to racial profiling. Supporters say it is needed to stem illegal immigration. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. WASHINGTON (AP)—Senators are expected to question Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano about the ramifications of Arizona's tough new immigration law when she appears for an oversight hearing. The Senate Judiciary Committee already had planned the hearing for the Homeland Security Department. Last week Arizona's governor signed a law requiring police to question people about their immigrant status if they suspect they are in the U.S. illegally. Napolitano's department oversees border security. President Barack Obama has called the new law "misguided." Arizona officials say the law is necessary because the federal government has failed to stop the steady stream of illegal immigrants.

Such BS!

Arizona is not going to bankrupt itself, or stretch its own resources thin, making illegal aliens a priority.

However, if they have a suspect, in a robbery or rape or shooting, and do not have enough evidence yet, to charge on those crimes, but DO have evidence of illegal alien status, this is a TOOL that law enforcement can use, to hold that perp until more investigative work is completed.

Representative Henry Johnson is worried that returning all of Mexican illegal alien will cause Mexico to flip over from having too much weight in the north.

So Janet is going to pull the big breast of federal funds away, put Arizona in the crib and close the door?

Since about 75% of most Agencies budgets are used for pushing paper, then why don't you fire a bunch of your office-bound do nothings and pay for more boots on the ground?

Oh, sorry, that would be too easy and too practical.

We might get something done right for once and make the taxpayer think he should get something for his money.

We all owe Arizona a debt of gratitude for forcing this issue to Code Red alert status.

This is really making me angry. The government is blowing money like crazy gamblers & they are not concerned about citizens who are being robbed, having their livestock killed, their fences are being cut & they are living in fear of their lives.

The citizens of Arizona should take pictures & start logging facts about their losses & have a class action suit against the government to be compensated for the lack of the Feds not enforcing the law.

When ICE goes after a "dangerous" immigrant they aren't allowed to arrest the rest of the family, even if they are illegal. Despite what federal laws, feds are chronically hampered by politically driven policies.

I would like to see the locals roll in right after ICE to take the whole family and put them on immigration hold.

There it is. Napolitano has NO intention of guarding the border. Impeachment, anyone?

Texas will likely follow...but we wisely do not trust our legislature to be in session but once every two years (odd years). We send them home. They’ll be back 2011.

Napolitano is basically saying that AZ is telling her what to do. What a hoot!

If Napolitano wants more money, she should tell Obama to stop the stimulus spending and divert some money to her organization so that she can do the job that she says she doesn't have to do. Of course, she could divert some of the agencies dollars from tracking God Fearing, Anti-abortion, Bible thumping gun toters to securing the border. But she won't do that.

Got that right! Now some politicians are forced into very uncomfortable positions in an election year. How they react will tell the electorate everything they need to know about them.
