Jeb Bush carries the Bush political torch

Talk privately to just about any leading Republican about the 2012 presidential race, and you’ll often hear a sentence that starts with: “If his last name were ...”

They’re talking about the former two-term governor of one of America’s largest states who is a reformer, a policy wonk and a savvy pol who left office on good terms — and whose last name happens to be Bush.

Were he not the brother of a recently departed and unpopular president, there is little doubt that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush would be an obvious, and formidable, White House prospect for the GOP.

Yet even with the family baggage, many Republicans remain convinced Bush could be a strong contender.

We're not fooled, Martin. You can promote Jeb until the cows come home but conservatives won't vote for him and you'll just carve him up when he wins the nomination anyway.

Having succeeded in choosing our last presidential candidate, they begin working on choosing the next.

There have been more names floated by the DC establishment for 2012 than there are ships in the Sixth Fleet. 'That woman' really has them spooked.

As someone who has voted for a lot of Bushes, including GHW Bush for Congress, NO MORE BUSHES!!!

Jeb already pooped in his mess kit when he slammed the Arizona immigration law yesterday. What is it with the Bush family and immigration? Is it because they have an hispanic in the family?

No more bushes.

It's not just that people are tired of the Bushes. Jeb looks pretty tired himself nowadays.

Politicians thrive on excitement and adulation. When they have to go without it for a long time they start to wither or crumple up.

Whatever his good points, he won't be going anywhere in national politics for the forseeable future.

Terri Schiavo would be deeply saddened, if her governor had commuted her death sentence.

“There have been more names floated by the DC establishment for 2012 than there are ships in the Sixth Fleet. ‘That woman’ really has them spooked.”

It reminds me of 1979 and early 1980. Bush was the Establishment first choice, but Ford was always in reserve as a possibility if Reagan looked like he might actually win the nomination. In this case, Romney is the “new Bush” and Jeb Bush is the “new Ford”, standing in reserve in the (likely) event Romney crashes and burns.

You are going to see more and more appeals to Jeb Bush to “save the party” from the disaster that they believe Palin to be.

Fortunately, people remember that Bush 43 (except for his Supremem Court appointments, one of whom was forced on him)was pretty much a disaster. Bush 41, ditto.

The Immigration debate in Arizona, that Jeb Bush has stepped into, ha toasted his marshmallows with Levin and Talk Radio as well.

He can’t beat her and I suspect that he knows this. But he may try anyway.

No more Bushes. EVER. 24 years of Bush/Clinton/Obama is enough.

“Jeb looks pretty tired himself nowadays.”

He is no ball of fire as a campaigner. If he runs against Palin, her energy level will make him look old as well.
