WILKES-BARRE A woman was charged by state police at Wyoming for allegedly hiding 30 heroin packets inside the diaper of a 1-year old girl during a traffic stop.
Kayla Mildred Culver, 23, of Garfield Street, Larksville, was stopped in the area of South Main and Northampton streets, Wilkes-Barre, for a traffic violation after a state trooper followed her leaving a residence in a high crime area on April 7, according to arrest records.
Culver initially told the state trooper that she was at a home on Amber Lane to pay a debt, but later admitted she purchased heroin at the house. When she placed the toddler back into a booster seat, the trooper saw a heroin packet fall to the ground.
The trooper searched the toddlers clothing allegedly finding three heroin bundles, or 30 heroin packets, hidden in the diaper, arrest records indicate.
Culver was arraigned by District Judge Michael Dotzel in Wilkes-Barre Township on charges of possession of a controlled substance, criminal conspiracy with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of children, reckless endangerment, false reports to law enforcement, false identification to law enforcement and providing false statements to law enforcement. She was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $20,000 bail.
State police alleged Culver identified herself using a sisters name.
A passenger in the vehicle, Robert Cunningham, 31, of Larksville, is facing similar drug offenses. He has not been arraigned as of Wednesday afternoon.
State police said Culver and Cunningham took turns holding the toddler during the traffic stop. Culver denied she hid the heroin in the toddlers diaper.
A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled on May 4 in Wilkes-Barre Central Court.
