TOPEKA — You didn't need to stray from the south lawn of the Kansas Capitol to see the opposite poles of the state budget debate Wednesday.

In the morning, hundreds of people with developmental disabilities and their supporters in "Can you see me now?" T-shirts tied more than 4,000 blue ribbons on a fence, urging lawmakers to raise taxes to restore funding cuts and reduce waiting lists for disability services.

I'd also like to add, that despite the Eagle's title there was no one there to "decry" cuts.

In fact, the house Republicans are merely trying to hold spending steady.

We are bad at street theater...have people show up in (mock) shackles and chains with signs decrying “tax and spend slavery”.

It would be nice if they could understand that when adults are running the economy, the economy grows and generates more taxes for this type of help.

When the redistributionists are running the country, the economy shrinks and everyone gets hurt.

They have to make a choice between everyone being miserable because it is "fair" and allowing the producers to get ahead and grow the economy because a rising tide lifts all boats, even the battered row boats.

The weird thing is, that's one segment (spending for disabled people) the house is actually increasing money spent on. They're reshuffling it from elsewhere.

The whole problem is that the lefty governor has refused to sign any budget that doesn't include a tax increase. But there's no reason for it as they can close the budget gap without it.

It's just crazy.

I have long observed this mindset and simply can't relate to their thinking. Unfortunately it's proof of an abysmal educational system and, sorry to say, evidence of what psychologists call learned helplessness. They have been well and truly conditioned so that they cannot see past the next month's check.

Even worse, they have been conditioned to assume that anyone attempting to engage in commerce is somehow plotting to take away their precious dole benefits! A huge disconnect but one that has obviously been repeated ad infinitum by tax-hungry demogogues.
