WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus formally announced a policy change Thursday clearing the decks for women to serve on submarines.
Women had never been allowed to serve on submarines in the 110-year history of the underwater force.
The new coed era will begin once selected female officers complete 15 months of training. The plan calls for three women to be assigned to eight crews attached to four guided-missile attack and ballistic missile submarines, the Navy said on its Web site.
The change had been anticipated since Defense Secretary Robert Gates formally presented a letter to congressional leaders Feb. 19 notifying them of the Navy's desire to reverse the policy of prohibiting submarine service to women.

I'm not against women serving in the military, as long as they have the capability and morale to make it so, but like the author of the linked article, Phyllis Schlafy, I'm against women aboard submarines.
You should realize a submarine is a precarious environment to work in.
One woman submariner's mistake can lead to the fatal deaths of all her male counterparts, and the sub herself.
Leave the Silent Service to the men, OK!

Well, should be fun for a few lucky sailors - while it lasts. Actually, I suspect that it will cause a lot of problems (jealousy for sure) which will cascade into many other problems... Just another problem for the Navy to contain (and deny)...

If it ain’t broke, (no women on subs), why fix it (put women on subs)??? Maybe to upset/change/disturb the situation? Notice I didn’t say make it better or worse.

Not that I think it's a good idea to put chicks on subs, of course.

This is a plain stupid idea. I am sure that Ray Mabus knows this, but for whatever reason wants to enable the misguided feminists to check off that accomplishment and further degrade the readiness of our military. I am sure that he will please the Democrats, but nothing more.
Our country backs away a little further from its ability to deal with danger.
