Judge asks feds to show militia did more than talk (Michigan Militia case slowly coming apart)

DETROIT (AP) - A federal judge challenged prosecutors Wednesday to show that nine members of a Michigan militia accused of plotting war against the government had done more than just talk and should remain locked up.

U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts heard nearly 10 hours of testimony and arguments over two days. She did not make a decision about whether the nine will remain in custody, saying only that a ruling would come soon. The members of a southern Michigan group called Hutaree have been in custody for a month.

An indictment accuses them of weapons violations and a rare crime: conspiring to commit sedition, or rebellion, against the government by first killing police officers. Prosecutors say the public would be at risk if the nine are released. But defense lawyers claim the government has overreached with a criminal case based mostly on hateful speech.

It was about making a political statement, not about them being a danger.

“...commit sedition, or rebellion, against the government by first killing police officers.” Wouldn’t that apply to Muslim terrorists? I wish they would go after those people with that much prejudice.

It was about a chance to dress up in ninja suits and take their guns somewhere and terrorize someone.

Why do they need probable cause let alone evidence? Just have fun boys and try not to kill to many friendly pets.

Ruh roh! The judge is throwing a monkey wrench in the lib template for smearing right-wingers. A woman judge at that. Did the FBI act stupidly?

In this instance if the FBI had waited and something had taken place, we would be jumping all over them.

There are things that trouble me about this case, but I’m not quite to the point of trashing the government yet.

I’m willing to listen a bit longer.

The Obambi administration is a loose canon. We have a bunch of leftist idiots running things at the top. It just seems like they’re itching to get the goods on a right wing group to smear all the Right with. So I’m not leaning very favorably toward the FBI in this.

I still do want to learn more before setting that in stone.

I haven’t leaned very favorably towards them since Ruby Ridge. Completely covering up Waco made it worse.

Those two incidents absolutely destroyed my respect for the bureau. (and for that matter the BATF as well) Beyond what actually took place, it was gauling and infuriating to watch the FBI and BATF officials rattle off lie after lie in their Congressional testimony.

IMO, we had war crimes level of infractions at both incidents. Waco was by far the worst.

Until justice is done in those instances, I will never again trust the FBI and BATF completely.

I think this administration is making a big thing about militias to distract. There have been numerous stories in the media lately.

Exactly. At any rate I haven’t stopped listening in regards to this story. I haven’t heard much that makes me sympathize with the Hutaree. But the Feds have to go more than an extra mile now to convince me of anything. They earned that.

It does seem to be an artificial administration/media template.

Same here regarding the Hutaree. If they were discussing some of the things they are charged with, they sound like some good candidates for a stint in a padded room until they’re about 85.

I spotted this earlier tonight:

http://lamecherry.blogspot.com/2010/04/judge-victoria-roberts.html

Turns out she was named to the bench in 1998 (Clinton appointee) & confirmed by the Senate 85-0 (not all Senators made the vote)

“The judge is throwing a monkey wrench in the lib template for smearing right-wingers.”

That one sentence alone nails it perfectly.

Here is why they won’t go after them:

The Agent-in-Charge for the arest of the Huartee Militia was Andrew Arena. I am watching with interest to see if his undercover agent is a Muslim who infiltrated the Christian Militia. It is possible if you look at Agent Arena’s reputation.

Note his quote in FBI release:

http://detroit.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/pressrel10/de032910.htm

Federal Bureau of Investigation -Detroit

“Nine Members of a Militia Group Charged with Seditious Conspiracy and Related Offenses”

“.. Andrew Arena, FBI Special Agent in Charge, said, “This is an example of radical and extremist fringe groups which can be found throughout our society. The FBI takes such extremist groups seriously, especially those who would target innocent citizens and the law enforcement officers who protect the citizens of the United States...”

Here is a lengthy article about Agent Arena’s history:

Special SuperModel in Charge: Federal Bureau of Islamists Gets a New Detroit Chief

By Debbie Schlussel

“By the way, Andrew “Andy” Arena has a history of brown stuff at the end of his nose when it comes to Islamists. Wearing brown nose make-up for Muslims was his job at the FBI in New York. “

Hope my suspicions are wrong, but this still does not pass the smell test.

This will get no attention at all from the msm who broadcast the arrests far and wide with the attendant hyperbole.

After Waco, I will ALWAYS give the “militia” the benefit of the doubt.
