New drilling won't be authorized until probe into oil spill completed By Michael O'Brien - 04/30/10 07:39 AM ET
President Barack Obama won't authorize more offshore drilling until an investigation into a Gulf Coast oil spill is complete, a senior advisor said Friday.
White House senior advisor David Axelrod said during an appearance on "Good Morning America" that the president will not sign off on new drilling in the immediate future.
"No additional drilling has been authorized and none will until we find out what happened here and whether there was something unique and preventable here," Axelrod said during an appearance on ABC.
Obama had proposed at the end of March to open areas of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico to oil and gas exploration, a decision that some Democrats from coastal states disliked. Republicans said the new exploration authorized by the president didn't go far enough.
But the explosion of a drilling rig off the coast of Louisiana that has spilled massive amounts of oil into the Gulf may put those plans in political jeopardy.
The administration has revved up response efforts in the Gulf, having spoken to the governors of those states affected by the spill Thursday night.
But Axelrod said that until an "adequate review" of this recent spill can be conducted, and until different proposals can be evaluated, no more drilling would be authorized.
Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) called for a temporary halt to offshore drilling in the wake of the spill.
How convenient.
Obama did it. He sabotaged the well
better tank up folks, there goes the price of oil
Just when Iran and Venezuela needed the extra cash
Obama did it. He sabotaged our country.
Any talk of Iran yet?
As if Obama ever wanted to drill here anyway.
This will become the new “Three Mile Island”.
This is just TOO convenient - my gut is sending out alarms like crazy on this!
I'm surprised that there is so little talk of espionage.
We are dealing with the Bill Ayers, SDS clique here.
Offshore and a foreign contractor.
This guy is incredible...he publicly says one thing, then his minions release a contrary statement.
I can see the PC ads now. Drill Baby Drill superimposed over a photo of the burning rig and dead oil soaked Pelicans.
It should be interesting to watch the price of crude these next few weeks. It will toy with reaching triple digits for a couple of weeks or a month or so and then like before, once it breaks the triple digits, Katie bar the door, and it will skyrocket and speculators will drive it up faster & higher.
Though THIS TIME I will sell and take some profits IF it starts dropping 10% after reaching highs. Whenever that is. We hesitated last time, by then too late, and lost some nice profits. Husband is in for the long haul but some profit taking would be sweet. :)
Never waste a crisis.
The obama media will build this up more and more everyday because it has the essential ingredients. Evil oil company, environmental disaster and big gov swooping in to save the day. BARF.
Never waste a crisis.
And to add gasoline to the fire, next week the Offshore Technology Conference is being held in Houston. This is the largest offshore drilling trade show in the world.
Never waste a crisis.
And we now have a refinery fire in Memphis.
Never waste a crisis.
Yes, how convenient that the rig is on the ocean floor where it can’t be examined for signs of sabotage. Militant enviro-terrorists have burned animal experiment labs and destroyed homes and ski lodges being built in Colorado, so they certainly could plant explosives on an oil platform to get BO to “reconsider” oil drilling. This could be his own operation to silence those who wanted more domestic drilling.
I heard them mention sabotage this morning on FOX with some guy from Houston. Then went on to say it was far-fetched and they should look back at the other causes he had mentioned.
Now that sounds like a Wag the Dog scenario.
