WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama on Friday directed that no new offshore oil drilling leases be issued unless rigs have new safeguards to prevent a repeat of the explosion that unleashed the massive spill threatening the Gulf Coast with major environmental damage.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, meanwhile, declared a state of emergency in the state's Panhandle coastal counties because of the threat.

"Senior adviser David Axelrod earlier defended the administration's response to the April 20 accident, saying "we had the Coast Guard in almost immediately."

He deflected comparisons with the government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, telling ABC's "Good Morning America" that such speculation "is always the case in Washington whenever something like this happens."

Yet European nations have been drilling in the North Sea for decades. And they have sensitive fisheries there as well.

It’s amazing that the Congress sits by and allows Obama to steal more and more power.

What’s the deal? Lord Barak is just going to blame it all on Big Oil, and bleed them dry in fines to pay for any “damage.” (Except for the companies that contributed to his campaigns.)

Where’s the president? Why isn’t he out there doing something to fix this problem?

It’s not as if this is a “natural” disaster..... this for sure “man-made”!! Why didn’t the govt have oversight and why didn’t the govt shut them down for lack of safety precautions?????
It’s Bush’s fault!!!!Ooopss, Bush is not in the WH now.
It’s Obummer’s fault!!!!!!!

I was expecting this. Of course, he’d use this event to stop off-shore drilling. You know, the news says, “worse disaster in 40 years.” Dude, if it’s only 40 years, that’s not that bad. That’s a pretty good record for big oil.

I have a question. One accident and this JOKE suspends all new drilling.

We have MULTIPLE EXAMPLES OF wasteful PORKULUS spending--why not suspend ALL NEW SPENDING?

Good point. They talk about the Exxon Valdez with such frequency because it's so well known. It's so well known because it's so entirely singular, rare. It's so rare because for the most part, drilling off-shore and transporting oil has a remarkably safe track-record.

And, with respect to drilling specifically, I can't remember ANYTHING like this happening before. Sure, there have been oil-rig fires and accidents prior to this, but not NEARLY as catastrophic. This leads me to believe that it very well may have been intentional, rather than accidental.

Coal mining disaster. Off-shore drilling rig spill. How convenient? What’s next, a radiation leak at a nuke plant?

I’ve been a bit busy. Has anyone come up with a plausible explanation why the oil rig exploded? The last I heard, it was considered highly unusual. Nonetheless, it makes a great excuse, eh?

This man has the best timing in the world! Wow, every time he decides to tackle a problem, a related crisis just pops up out of nowhere. Weird isn’t it?

"obama Shelves New Offshore Drilling (Comparisons to Katrina)"

The thing about this that bothers me is I keep hearing "never let a crisis go unused" or what ever the quote was.

But you would have to know the crisis was about to happen in order to broadcast out of the blue, that you were going to allow new offshore drilling like obama did. How short a time before this crisis?

Yeah, I know, it's a tin foil hat I'm wearing today. But Wow! What a coincidence! Obama says he's going to allow new offshore drilling when we all knew he was firmly against it, and then it seems like before his breath was cold from saying it, there's this accident. Perfect timing! And now he gets to say NO new offshore drilling because look here see what happens and why you can't have your own oil.

Ok, taking my shinny tin foil hat off now. : )

Remember he’s pushing for nuclear power plants he thinks France is on the right path and the oil spill plays into his hand.

Almost as if they had the Coast Guard on it’s way before the explosion.

It’s amazing that the Congress sits by and allows Obama to steal more and more power.

Why would it bother them?

That is what most of them spend their entire career trying to do.
