Chief Beck: L.A. won't be guided by Arizona immigration rules
L.A. Times ^ | April 30, 2010 | Joel Rubin

With as many as 100,000 people expected to convene downtown Saturday to rally in support of immigrant rights, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck went out of his way to make clear that his officers are guided by a different set of rules than the controversial state law recently passed in neighboring Arizona.

"Because of the ongoing issues in Arizona, I wanted to make something perfectly clear," Beck said. "Special Order 40 is the mandate of this department. …That is how I will police this city as long as I am the chief of police."

Beck was referring to the agency's long-standing policy that prohibits officers from initiating contact with someone solely to determine whether he or she is in the country legally. It has drawn the periodic ire of critics who argue for a tougher stance against undocumented immigrants.

Beck and other chiefs before him, however, have said the policy is an important tool, as it encourages illegal immigrants who witness crimes to assist police without fear of being deported.

And if the "protesters" start to bombard your officers with rocks and bottles, so be it. They will not fight back.

Or any other immigration “rules.” Laws, not rules, pinheads. It’s not a suggestion.

I’ll take the bait - a guy tries to stab an officer. Once they are done sending him into the last century they ask for ID right ? He’s an illegal alien - what do they do ?

Reap the whirlwind LA, you’ve sown it.

SF as well.

I hope that sanctuary cities start to see a boom of illegals immigrating to them in the next few weeks and the problems that come with it.

Just as LA was losing some of its illegals back to Mexico due to lack of work here, this jacka** springs up to invite them all here — Arizona’s loss is L.A.’s gain.

Beck must have a lot of lawns needing to be mowed, eh?

Oh please. What's the ratio of Good Samaritan illegals versus those actually committing crimes? Like they're going to snitch, anyhow. What a stupid excuse to not enforce the law.

No shortage of funds in California, come on in.
Lets guess what the illegal school population is.
California purportedly has 50% of the illegal population of Mexicans. We in Illinois are in much the same shape. 2AM and the emergency rooms far into the western suburbs are overrun with our visitors and their children. The cost must be staggering.

Which is why we have out of control crime here in L.A. The gangs rule the streets because Villariagossa doesn’t want to lose the Latino vote so he maintains the status quo. Which means more innocent people will die due to drive-bys, kidnappings, assaults, rapes...

Yes, but so do we! Guns/ammo sales have been thru the roof since 11/08 election. Saw another line out the door of local gun shop in L.A. last weekend.

I’m expecting these Marxist Workers Unite May Day rallies to get really out of hand tomorrow. The L.A. cops are going to find out who their friends REALLY are.

I have a couple of things to say.

1) Not all Hispanics are upset with this Arizona law. My sister in law is a naturalized American born in Mexico. She has been furious about the illegals coming in and the problems that they cause. I am sure there are many more like her.

2) Anyone who has ever been near the border knows that the closer you get the higher percentage of Americans of Mexican heritage there are. My experience is with south-west Texas, but am sure that it is the same all along the border. The point is that the law enforcement officers of the city, county and even the Border Control officers are largely Hispanic. So, is it ‘racial profiling’ if the cop and the offender are of the same “race”?

Earth to Chief Beck, if the illegals were out of the country, there would be little crime to "assist" the police in solving. It would be a strange day though. At least 1/3 of all crimes would stop the day it happened. I guess then the case load would drop by the same.

So why will the cops bother to show up at this “rally” anyway? If they riot, which they always do, the LAPD can’t disperse, can’t bust heads, can’t arrest, can’t ask immigration status, can’t do squat. Why be there?

Let them burn the city down again like they did in the 90’s. Watch the hypocrites scream then.
