My point, though, is that Halliburton gets contracts for whatever they do because there are either a) no other companies that offer this service or b) a whole lot of political connections. I expect it’s more the former than latter, but it would be nice to know as there is no depending on the MSM to accurately report any of this. They like the b) storyline better.

In the oil patch, political considerations count for little; it’s all about relationships and trust. You get hired based upon your track record and price, dollars and cents.

All it takes is one out of the 30 or so subcontractors on any given well to ruin the prospect, so you don’t hire wannabees.

Truth is, Halliburton is the 800 lb gorilla of oilfield services, and didn’t get there by happenstance.

Somehow, this is all Dick Cheney’s fault.

Setup time depends upon a number of factors, one is the amount of calcium chloride is used in the cement, or how “hot” it is. I’m not sure of the particulars in this instance, but there are too many fishy things about this whole accident. There are safeguards in place to prevent this from happening, proven blowout protectors,I’m beginning to think the rig was blown up by someone.

Significantly, Haliburton always profits most by doing things right, and strictly by the book.

When you’re getting paid at Force Account to do a job, the short-cut is not your friend.

Left wing media goons don’t understand business; they just know that they hate it!

“I would be curious to know exactly what a SWAT team is going to do to protect an oil rig from a submarine attack 5000’ below the surface?”

.
Is this a serious question? - Could a torpedo be launched 5000 feet below the surface?

A gas release does not produce dense black smoke.

You've never lived in oilfield country I take it? Burning off natural gas produces a pretty dark, thick smoke at times.

I’ve spent months at a time doing layout in flare pit areas at refineries.

When its black smoke there has to be substantial liquid component to the discharge. - Most of the flare eruptions that I’ve witnessed started as just bright flames, and progressed to smoking as the liquids and solids got to the flare.

Any gas burning can produce smoke if there’s not enough oxygen for complete combustion. Smoke is unburned hydrocarbons in this case.

A gas venting under pressure from a conduit mixes rapidly with the surrounding atmosphere. You can test this with a simple tube attached to a gas pipe at home.

The flame will in all cases be free of visible particulate.

Change the fuel to kerosene, and the results will be quite different. Without a mixing chamber of some sort, there will be voluminous smoke, as liquids do not mix quickly enough without induced turbulence.

I don't think I would want to vent a gas pipe in my home.
But a release of gas mixed with crude will not produce a clean flame, either.
We had propane vent through a flare tip and still produce smoke until steam is added to induce an air draft, then the smoke disappears.
A natural draft of air sometimes doesn't provide complete combustion.

“I don’t think I would want to vent a gas pipe in my home.”

You do it every time that your stove, furnace, or water heater ignites.

Is this a serious question? - Could a torpedo be launched 5000 feet below the surface?

What would a SWAT team do for a torpedo launched 5', or 50' or 500' below the surface? The depth is meaningless. The point is why would SWAT teams be sent to oil rigs off shore, most, if not all of which already have their own security?

It must be recognized that his comment is an admission that the rig was sabotaged, and their own security was not adequate.

No rigs were sabotaged during the Bush tenure, so obviously something has changed since the Pretender has assumed office.

Why not use steel caisons? They don’t need to very large. They cane be welded together.
