Russia testing its fifth-generation fighter-jet

Officials here said the Russian Defense Ministry has been overseeing development of a new fighter-jet for the Air Force. They said the platform marked a fifth-generation combat aircraft titled T-50 and designed for long-range attack missions.

"Flight tests of the fifth-generation fighter are continuing successfully," Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said. In a statement on April 20, Putin expressed satisfaction with flight-tests of the T-50. The fighter-jet completed its maiden flight, which lasted 47 minutes, in January 2010.

The T-50 has been developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau in a project launched in 2002. In mid-2009, officials said, the Defense Ministry approved the design, and assembly of the first prototypes began.

The T-50 would be procured by the Russian Air Force, officials said. They said the aircraft would later be marketed to Moscow's allies, including those in the Middle East.

Officials said the T-50 would be equipped with advanced munitions, including eight R-77 air-to-air missiles. Other options would include two anti-ship munitions or two long-range air-to-ground missiles with a range of 400 kilometers.

The long-range AGMs were developed by the Novator Bureau. The T-50 was assembled by the Knappo aircraft factory, based in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

I agree. I think that they can come up with a better name.

Traditionally, we will call it something beginning with an “F”
like flanker, foxbat, fulcrum.

I propose calling it a “FUBO”

It will be changed to SU-50 when it enters unclassfied production. T in Russia for aircraft now is what x is for our experimental craft.

I knew it was a bad idea to cease F-22 production.

Maybe they didn’t steal it. Maybe 0bama gave it to them, to keep them from feeling ‘insecure’ and “threatened” by the evil U.S.

You don’t know how right you are. Five years from now Americans will be whining about how the Russians (and Chinese) have air superiority because we didn’t build enough F-22s.

The geniuses who cancelled the F-22 can’t do the math to see that the sunk costs are behind us for the F-22 and the cost for future F-22 production would end up being similar to the F-35 which is a much less capable plane.

Is there a similar pattern to politicians screwing over/ ignoring the will of the public and defense wonks stiffing the public with pet projects that don’t defend America?
