I was at a large "no nukes" rally in New York's Times Square yesterday (May 2). The event was organized by "Peace Action" and "United for Peace and Justice". Coordinator Judith LeBlanc announced that it was the start of a new version of the 1980s movement. Their goal then and now was/is to defund the military, give up our nukes and 'disarm'.

LeBlanc is the head of Peace Action and was a co-founder of United for Peace and Justice, who I think is a good deal larger and more influential than ANSWER. But what many there likely didn't know about LeBlanc, certainly most of the passerbys, tourists and probably many of the participants, is that she is also the vice-chair of the Communist Party.

Anyway, they called for the "reunification" of the Koreas, and one of the speakers repeatedly described the movement's situation as living within the "belly of the beast", referring of course to the US. The Weather Underground used to use that expression as well. They chanted "One World", "One World", "Just Peace", "Just Peace".

The movement was initiated on or just before communist May Day from the radical Riverside Church near where Obama and Bill Ayers were going to college at the same time (early to mid-80s), Ayers at Bank Street College, Obama at Columbia College, an undergrad portion of Columbia University.

During the time both were in that area going to school, the pro-Soviet 'Institute for Policy Studies' had launched the original "no nukes" movement from Riverside Church.

From David Horowitz's FrontPageMag.com/DiscoverTheNetworks.org:
Profile: Institute For Policy Studies (IPS)

IPS’s [Institute For Policy Studies] Washington, DC headquarters quickly became a resource center for national reporters and a place for KGB agents from the nearby Soviet embassy to convene and strategize. Cora Weiss headed one of the IPS's most successful forays -- into Riverside Church in Manhattan. She was invited there in 1978 by the Reverend William Sloane Coffin to run the church's Disarmament Program, which sought to consolidate Soviet nuclear superiority in Europe -- in the name of "peace." In 1982 Weiss helped organize the largest pro-disarmament demonstration ever held. Staged in New York City, the rally was attended by a coalition of communist organizations. During her decade-long tenure at Riverside, which became home to the National Council of Churches, Weiss regularly received Russian KGB agents, Sandinista friends, and Cuban intelligence agents. Weiss became infamous for her role in the psychological warfare conducted against U.S. prisoners of war held in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam War.

The Liberation News Service, which is a news source for hundreds of "alternative" publications nationwide (with antiwar, Marxist-oriented perspectives), was founded in 1967 with IPS assistance."

RE: Riverside Church, Communist Party USA, May 1, 2010!

Communist Led “Peace Movement” to Target US Military Budget

Guided by the Communist Party USA, the U.S.  “peace movement”  is entering a new phase.

The struggles against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be de-emphasized, while focus will shift to a broad based campaign to cut U.S. military spending.

The Communists plan to exploit public concern over economic problems, to pressure the Obama administration to hugely cut back on defense spending, weapons systems and overseas commitments.

"[Communist Party USA vice chair, Judith] LeBlanc signals that the “peace movement’s” new direction will begin with a major campaign. Significantly May 1 [2010!], will be the kickoff date and New York’s far left Riverside Church will be the founding venue."

"There will be people from every continent here to participate in the non-governmental organization gatherings that will be going on, with an international conference happening at Riverside Church from April 30 to May 1 [communist "May Day"], and then marching on May 2."--Judith LeBlanc, vice-chair Communist Party USA, 'national field organizer for Peace Action, the country’s largest grassroots peace organization with 100,000 members across the country', also co-founder of "United for Peace and Justice"

This demonstration was huge. I was on a bus going in the opposite direction of the march as it went eastward on 42nd Street and it went on for a long time. Lots of banners in what I assumed was Japanese but couldn’t be sure—very large contingent of these demonstrators. I know it wasn’t Korean, although there certainly might have been some South Koreans. Lots of rainbow flags saying “Peace.” Lots of peace symbols. The signs were not homemade—mucho money behind this whole thing.

Here’s a link to a must-read article on Cora Weiss and the 1980s communist-led “no nukes” movement which is underway again. 100,000 or more in Times Square on May 2 (2010). Same bunch from the 80s! Both movements were initiated from Riverside Church in Manhattan (2 blocks from Columbia University and College). Obama was a part of the movement in the 80s and clearly again now!
