LONDON (AP) - Exit polls: Conservatives win most seats in UK election, but fall short of a majority.
Any raw numbers?
The first exit polls of the British elections show a hung parliament with the Conservative Party winning 307 seats, Labour winning 255, the Liberals 59 and independents 29. The polls were issued as polling stations closed across the UK.
Parties need 326 votes to have a governing majority in the House of Commons, but observers said the performance of the Conservatives could be sufficient for party leader David Cameron to try forming a minority government.
The polls show a sharp drop in seats for Labour but the real surprise, should these polls prove accurate, would be for the Liberal-Democrats who had been expected to build on the 65 seats they had in the last legislature.
Conservative 307
Labour 255
Liberals 59
Independents 29
Problem with exit polls is that they do not include postal votes....large number this time apparently.
The Lib-Dems actually lost seats?
Indeed, the BBC noted that postal votes were greater in number than expected.
12-15% of the votes were done by during Cleggmania
This means that the exit polls might very well under-represent the Lib Dem vote.
I doubt it. That does not include the mail votes, most came during Cleggmania.
I think the mail votes will help increase the turnout for the LibDems. I have no idea what else though
The ‘independents’ would be Irish Unionists, right?
If so, it means a conservative majority. The IU’s and the Tories work pretty well together.
Again, either CBS doesn’t have the experience to tell it like it is, or they do and they are just misleading people again.
Another source said “small working majority” and suggested that the LD’s would win more than 59 seats.
The Unionists wouldn’t like you calling them Irish :)
Also note.
Proportional Representation would be a disaster for the UK.
But the LibDems and Labour want it badly.
Not yet, should start coming in soon, all night long too.
by raw numbers I thought you meant actual vote counts instead of exit polls.
I don’t think there are enough Unionists to push 307 into a real majority.
According to the BBC, overall turnout is high.
a hung parliament=not much of a change?
