Jim DeMint’s strategy is to help conservative underdogs (Endorsed Devore in November)
Washington Post ^ | May 6, 2010 | Marc Thiessen

Over at his Right Now blog, David Weigel comments on my column about Jim DeMint, declaring that the Republican South Carolina senator would “look like a genius today” if he had endorsed Rand Paul in Kentucky and Mike Lee in Utah, instead of supporting Chuck DeVore in California and Marlin Stutzman in Indiana.

Weigel misses the point of DeMint’s efforts. DeMint is not interested in “looking like a genius” -- he is interested in helping underdog conservatives get a chance in the primaries against the hand-picked candidates of the establishment. This means taking risks and backing candidates who have a tough fight for the nomination. As DeMint points out in my column (and Weigel does in his blog) both Paul and Lee were doing fine without DeMint’s help. This is why he put his resources toward more uphill battles.

But if you watch the video of DeMint’s speech at the David Horowitz Freedom Center, DeMint all but endorsed both Lee and Paul several weeks ago. And yesterday, DeMint formally got into the Kentucky race by endorsing Paul.

H*ll yeah. DeMint is the man. I am sick of these stinking RINOs pretending to be conservatives like Rick Perry, carl Rove, Jeb Bush and many others.

DeMint has come thisclose to endorsing Tarkanian in the US Senate race in Nevada. He has been quoted in news articles that the Danny is the best candidate but has yet to just come out and endorse him.

It's good that he has learned from his past endorsement mistakes.

Yeppers indeed! DeMint is to RINO Hunt, as Teddy Roosevelt was to Big Game Hunt - stand study, take aim, then shoot when kill shot is assured or can't get better! LOL

I like and respect Sarah, and I really like and respect Jim DeMint.

And I’m going to vote for Chuck DeVore.

And Fiorina is Sarah’s choice who says she is the only candidate who can win against Boxer.

DeMint may have endorsed DeGore but 13% isn’t going to win the primary.

He needs to drop-out.

Agreed. Endorsements don't always help. Sharron Angle has endorsements up the wazoo and yet she is still a distant third in the Nevada US Senate race.

Sue Lowden received an endorsement from the Susan B Anthony List - a pro-life group. However, in speaking with someone at the organization their criteria turns the endorsement into nothing more than a line during a campaign speech.

The SBA List cut out 10 of the 12 candidates immediately. Why? Because they are men. One of the male candidates could be a very strong pro-life candidate and yet they wouldn't even be considered.

They also passed over Sharron Angle (a 2 time "winner") this time in favor of Lowden. Their criteria is: Woman and Pro-Life. If a woman has changed position that is icing on the cake and they "win".

I flat out told the woman I spoke with that they were dumbing down women. When she asked what I meant I told her that they were telling woman to vote with their uterus rather than their brain. Don't vote for the best candidate - vote for the one who fits into the SBA List's little box.
