Rise of the mini Qaedas: What the Times Square bomber taught us
NY Post ^ | MAUREEN CALLAHAN

For all the confusion about who Faisal Shahzad is and how he got that way, there is one sure thing the failed Times Square bomber has shown us: The future of terrorism.

“Our threat picture in the US just got a lot more complicated,” says Ben Venzke, CEO of IntelCenter, a private group specializing in counter-terrorism that works with American and European military and intelligence agencies.

In short, it’s no longer just al Qaeda aiming to strike within the United States: “Now we have half-a-dozen or more very skilled groups looking to execute attacks,” he says. “Even getting close is a success for them.”

This, he and other specialists agree, is terrorism post 9/11: small-scale launches requiring only one person to execute, regarded by these terror networks as successes, even if they fail.

“I think we are going to see more individual terrorists and very small conspiracies,” says Brian Jenkins, senior adviser to the president of the RAND Corporation. “The good news is that we’re not going to see the Mumbais or the 9/11s [here]. The bad news is that they’re extremely hard to pick up.”

I posted this right after 9/11. Every terrorist group now knows that if they want the world to know its name, just pull off a big attack in front of the cameras.

The threat against us went up because Al Qaeda succeeded.

With regard to Shahzad, he was ill-trained or not trained at all in explosives technology.

I call BS........ hardly anyone learned anything. 0 and company are still asleep at the wheel. And NYC liberals seemed to be an ignorant lot.... just lookie at what is moving in next to Ground Zero.

Hopefully everyone with half a brain cell will leave the city (or has already left) and then we can get on with Soddom/Gomorrah part II. Gluttons for punishment.

And no, I am not advocating for anyone to be attacked, but there cmes a point in time where you may just have to take responsibility for not only your actions, but your inaction. Terrorists and your idiot liberal plicies aren't your problem. Guns, salt, transfats, global warming, low taxes, and tobacco are the root of all of Noo Yuck City's problems. /sarc /rant

I agree with the general FReeper assessment. Bullscat. This was known prior to 9/11 and clearly a known threat at the time of the first WTC bombing.

If anything, the US leftists have fostered and nurtured the growth of such home cells via PC policies.

And they are just as guilty for the casualties of such attacks.

For some weird reason libs have it in their tiny little minds that if some nut isn’t formally allied to a larger terrorist group, then he or she isn’t a terrorist. After the murders at the army base by Hasan, the media were quick to declare that it was no big deal, because he wasn’t formally tied to an established terror group. What a bunch of horse hockey. A terrorist not formally allied to a larger terrorsit group is still a terrorist. End of story.
