Harry Teague's companies cut health care
Politico ^ | May 10, 2010 | JOHN BRESNAHAN & JAKE SHERMAN

Posted on 05/10/2010 4:51:44 PM PDT by CedarDave

When he ran for Congress in 2008, businessman Harry Teague boasted that he provided health insurance for all of his employees back home in New Mexico.

But once he won his seat, Teague, a Democrat, voted twice against his party’s health care reform bill because “it tells businesses to do the right thing and provide insurance for employees but doesn’t guarantee or require affordable options.”

What Teague didn’t say at the time: At the very moment he was voting against the bill, his own companies were eliminating health care coverage for employees.

On Dec. 21, 2009 — as the health care debate was raging in Congress — a human resources manager at Teague’s Cavaloz Energy sent a memo to 250 employees of Teague-affiliated companies:

“Please be aware that effective Feb. 28, Cavaloz Energy Inc., Teaco Energy Services Inc., ABC Rental Tool, Eunice Well Servicing, Teaco Drilling will no longer offer health insurance to [its] employees. We would ask that all employees currently covered under the company’s insurance policy begin to seek an alternative solution.”

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the notice added. “Know that we value your employment here at Cavaloz.”

Teague is running against former Congressman Steve Pearce who is trying to regain the seat he gave up in 2008 to run for NM Senator (a big mistake in my opinion). Pearce also ran a oilfield service company but treated his employees much differently keeping them on the payroll during an industry downturn.

It's not that Teague couldn't afford to keep insurance for his employees: Politico states that he has a net worth of more than $41 million and is one of the richest members of Congress. Further in 2008-2009, Teague's holdings in Teaco assets yielded more than $3.3 million in dividend payments to him and his wife.

During a visit to local Republican headquarters I was told that several former Teague employees had come in to register as Republicans as they received pressure to register as Democrats when working at his company.

If he had voted for HCR would the Politico have run this story?

The federal penalty for denying coverage is $2,000 per employee. With 283,000 employees, AT&T (for example) would be penalized $600 million. By denying its employees health care, AT&T could possibly increase its profits by $4.1 billion.

Employers are going to stop offering health insurance as soon as they can. Because of Obomas Death Care Bill, it isn't fiscally responsible to offer it any more.

Pearce is a Republican, one of the best when it comes to upholding conservative principles (i.e. a VERY long way from being a RINO!

Which is exactly why I questioned the statement.
I want to see Logical Me’s argument.

Pearce is one of the few bright spots in NM politics. I think he’ll kick olf whiney Harry’s butt in November.

Teague is a coward, he voted against the bill for political cover, then he threw his employees on the back of the American taxpayer.
