Hawaii’s special congressional election is producing a large voter turnout, which may be a good sign for Republican candidate Charles Djou.

*snip*

Special elections generally don’t draw a high turnout, but this race for the seat vacated by Democrat Neil Abercrombie’s resignation (to run for governor) has heated up.

*snip*

That’s not good news for Democrats in a district they historically have dominated.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has essentially given up on the race, announcing Monday it would no longer spend money trying to win there.

Djou rides wave of D.C. cash

Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou, the Republican running in a special election for former Rep. Neil Abercrombie's vacant House seat, has received an avalanche of Washington campaign cash in the run-up to the May 22 vote.

Republican lawmakers and GOP-aligned interest groups have sent tens of thousands of dollars to Djou's campaign, including a total of $106,000 donated by 51 House Republicans. That sum accounts for nearly a tenth of the $1.2 million Djou has raised for the race, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Among the members who have donated are House Minority Leader John Boehner, who gave $5,000, and Whip Eric Cantor, who donated more than $10,000. National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions gave Djou $7,000 and NRCC recruitment head Kevin McCarthy sent more than $5,000.

In just the last week, Djou has received $1,000 from Texas Rep. John Culberson and $2,000 from Nebraska Rep. Adrian Smith, as well as $2,500 from McCarthy.

Political action committees have also anted up for Djou's effort, and he's received $2,500 from the Republican Jewish Coalition and $4,950 from the National Rifle Association.

The local official has been on the receiving end of hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of television attacks from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, but the DCCC announced Monday that it wouldn't spend any more money in the race, citing local Democrats' inability to rally behind a single candidate.

Waiting for the absolutists to claim that Djou is a RINO and will be no different in office than either one of his Dem opponents in 3, 2, 1...

Newsmax: Dems don’t historically dominate a district in Hawaii. They dominate the entire State.

Aside from that GO DJOU !!!!

Its a great thing! We should keep it real though, The only reason the GOP won is a split DEM party there. The RATs will probably retake the seat in Nov.

I think there’s a reason the DNC has stopped supporting their candidates this time around. Djou might only have his position for about 6 months. In fact, in a couple month he’ll have to gear up for another election. Neither Case or Hanabusa want to withdraw today because they know the opponent will run in November as an incumbent if he/she does so.
