Since the Governor of Hawaii is a Republican who endorsed John McCain, campaigned for McCain and spoke at the Republican National Convention, I’m having a hard time finding a motive for officials of that state to be covering for Obama.

The same reason that you're covering for him. Neither of you can seem to find your conscience or tell the truth when money is put in front of you.
