The merged Honolulu Star-Advertiser debuts June 7, with nearly 400 people losing their jobs in the process, according to the publisher of the combined newspaper.

The Star-Bulletin purchased The Advertiser from the Gannett Co. and Francis said he expects to hire about half of the Advertiser's 580 employees, meaning about 290 Advertiser workers will lose their jobs in the merger.
The Advertiser, one of Gannetts larger newspapers with a daily circulation of about 130,000, was founded in 1856 and purchased by Gannett in 1993.

Of course I bet a lot of their readers were buying both papers and they won’t sell that many more papers.
Don’t know about you guys, but “unemployed journalist in Hawaii” sounds like just about the deadest-end that a dead-end career could possibly hit
Obama told everyone that a rising unemployment rate is a good thing so I’m sure the journalists in Hawaii are happy about losing their jobs.
